YOU CAN’T KEEP A GOOD PAPER DOWN SOUTH when a lot of Good Yankees want to read it.
and here’s proof! Southern Pines’ own Postmaster P. Frank Buchan is shown handing over a bag of
“PILOTS” last Saturday to W. R. Washburn, ex-troop carrier pilot for the Army. Behind our post
master, looking as though he thinks The PILOT is too good to send Yankees and is downright mad
about it, is Walter Menne, ex-heavy bombardment pilot for the Army. While atop the steps, pert and
pretty, stands Miss Ola Lilley, of Pinehurst, able Resort Airlines hostess. Three hours later the
PILOTS were in New York.

Local Boy Scout Troop
The Southern Pines Rotary

at the Lakeview Hotel. President

The speaker for the luncheon,

up for discussion and the mem
bers decided to make the neces

it ready for use in a few weeks.
The meeting adjourned with all
members pledging to give their
full support to the local troop.

The Moore County school chil
dren are helping the President’s
famine emergency committee this
month, in the form of a famine
relief “checklist” issued by the
American Red Cross.
Through the schools the Red
Cross will distribute a six-point
guide for saving Wheat, cereals,
and fats, and eliminating food
wastage, Colonel George P.
Hawes, Jr., chairman of the
Moore County Chapter, said here
today'. He added that H. Lee
Thomias, county superintendent
of schools, Philip Weaver, super
intendent of Southern Pines
schools, and J. B. Harbison, su
perintendent of Pinehurst school,
are cooperating whole heartedly
in this program.
Mindful of hungry millions
abroad, and with President Tru
man’s famine emergency commit
tee work spreading into every
community in the United States,
the American Junior Red Cross
will send out the checklist to
reach the families of its members
and of other school children
throughout the country.
