No. 15 7.22 CONGRATUUTIONS FROM THE Sandhill Sport Shop Lvo ^ 1916 QRjlbS Ydure ifi Central Carolina Telephone Company A Graduationless Commencement At Vass-Lakeview Despite the fact that there was no senior class, due to the switch over from eleven to twelve grades Vass- Lakeview School held com mencement exercises which end ed with a sermon by Dr. Charlton H. Storey, pastor of Bethesda Presbyterian Church, Aberdeen, in the school auditorium Sunday morning. Dr. Storey brought an inspiring message which he ad dressed principally to the young people. Special music by a vested choir of high school boys and girls was a pleasing feature of the service. Mrs. Reid Pleasants directed, and Mrs. W. E. Glad stone was at the piano. On Friday evening the large crowd present was delighted with a mystery comedy, “Am I Intrud ing?” which was presented by Mary Catherine Johnson, Thelma Autrey, Opal Baker, Nancy Smith, Mary Bridgers, Peggy Haynes, William John Graham, Billy Odom, Newton Caviness, Robert Bailey, Ralph Hendrick and Odell Autrey, under the di rection of Mrs. Gladstone. Between acts a group of high school girls sang ‘-Tis Spring,” and six couples, Ruth Blue and Robert Hardy, Lucille Overby and Mayward Bullock, Della Mae Oakley and Albert Crissman, and Doris Lynch and Mac Thomas, gave their interpretation of “One-tzy, Two-zy, I Love You-zy,” with Josephine Ransdell at the piano. On Tuesday evening, Mrs. Reid Pleasants presented her large music class in a pleasing recital. The pupils were divided into three groups, and Mrs. W. R. Sugg of Carthage was present to act as judge, to determine the winners of silver pins offered by Mrs. Pleasants to the best in each group. In the first group, composed of third, fourth and fifth grade pu pils, were Norma Briggs, George Cooper, Johnny Ferguson, Caro lyn Evans, Kathleen George, Viv ian Ruth Matthews, Ann Rans dell, Carol Smith, Larry Smith, Catherine Stewart, Leslie Cath erine Taylor, and Shirley Thomas. Ann Ransdell won first place, Carol Smith placed sec ond, and Kathleen George and Larry Smith ranked third. Pupils from the sixth, seventh and eighth grades were Edith Bailey, Joanne Chappell, Rosa Lee Chavis, Mary Ruth Clark, Alice Evans, Betty Jean Gamer, Eula Mae Garner, Virginia Jones, Daisy Marks, Eunice Parker,. Marilyn Ransdell and Nancy Wooten. Ninth, tenth and eleventh grade pupils were Thelma Autrey, Marian Bailey, Lula Belle Boggs, Herminia Causey, Ruth Frye, Phyllis Hayes, BiUy Odom, Jose- ppiine Ransdell],; Betty Jean Routh and Nancy Smith. Hermin ia Causey won first place; Jose phine Ransdell was second, and Thelma Autrey, third. :W?rs, Pleasants awarded pins to the first in each group on Fri day evening, and Mrs. H. A. Borst, president of the Vass Wo man’s Club, presented the club’s English prize to Gerald Hughes. On Tuesday the school closed a very successful year under the principalship of J. H.
