SP Golf Club To Have
Lal)or Day Tournament
Five teams and sixty or more
players of the Sandhills Golf
League are expected to take peirt
in the Labor Day golf tournament
to be played at the Southern
Pines Country Club. ,
The teams that will take part
are: Rockingham-Hamlet, Wades-
boro, Laurenburg, Lumberton
and Southern Pines. Southern
Pines, to date, is leading the
League — undefeated in six
matches.
This Labor Day Tournament is
the opening gun of a program to_
establish Southern Pines more
firmly than ever as one Of the
leading golfing centers of the
South. In recent years Pinehurst
has stepped far ahead of South
ern Pines as the mid-South center
of important golfing tourna
ments. Southern Pines declares
itself back in the race.
W. W, Sherman, new owner of
the Southern Pines Country Club,
is definitely interested in show
ing the best in the golfing world
that Southern Pines can offer as
much or more than any other
golfing resort in , the South.
ARTHUR PATE
1st Lt. Arthur Pate received
his discharge at Fort Bragg and
is now here on terminal leave.
Lt. Pate was with the 9th Air
Force, Troop Carrier Sqdn., and
spent 18 months overseas serving
in Germany and Englaild. He
flew an air route from Munich to
Paris for army personnel and for
a time flew Greeks, working in
Germany, back to their native
land. Arthur plans to visit in Ar
kansas during his leave time. His
brother Lewis is stationed in Cal
ifornia with the 3rd Air Force
and the other member of the
family,' James, is a member of
THE PILOT staff. James was
S|Sgt. in the 5th Air Force, was
in the army for four years, and
spent 30 months in the Pacific.
at the Sunrise Theatre through
United Artists release. The all-
star cast includes Bonita Gran
ville, Beulah Bondi, Edward* Ry-
an,Raymond Welburn, Billie
Burke, Zasu Pitts and the inimi
table Heddia Hopper.. Romantic
Andy Russell sings. Spike Jones
■and His City Slickers do a cou
ple of specialties and the King
Csle Trio “'give out” with their
unusual jive.
The belated attention for the
“forgotten men and women” of
Hollywood is the result of the pe
culiar requirements of the photo
play based on Breneman’s phen
omenally popular air show.
To short cut the necessity of
nom-de-movies for so many play
ers, Director Harold Schuster hit
upon the easy out by having
those performers speak out their
own names and home towns.
Of course all minor characters
who at long last get a chance to
]shed their professional anony
mity love it.
So, also, will all the home town
folks who are going to see them
and hear them on the screen.
