The Knowlton family from the
Pinetop turned out to wave away
the automobiles approaching too
near the high voltage lines that
were down across the highway.
Cannon, having no means of
communication with the outside,
stuck to his post until the CP&L
emergency crew arrived. He then
came to Southern Pines and made
his report to the office. Emerg
ency repair crews were immed
iately brought in from other
areas and work continued thro
ughout the night.

GI DEMOCRATS
(Continued from Page 1)
Spies, and Spencerville..
During the informal discussion,
several points of interest were
stressed. It was hoped that the
GI Democrats would be the
means of bringing together all
veterans for a single purpose....
that of participating in better
gjovernment of the community
and State through the Democra
tic Party system. As the GI Dem
ocrats represent no single veter
ans organization, but all of them
of all wars, this unity of veterans
they believed possible in a degree
not previously experienced.
An opinion was also expressed
that the GI Democrats might
best pursue their goal of better
government if the local men
heading the organization were
elected from those who would not
be interested primarily in using
it as a springing board for their
own political asperations.
Friday, September 6, was voted
on as the time for the next meet
ing, at which it was proposed
permanent officers be elected.
That allowed in the meantime a
two-week period for the purpose
of contacting veterans through
out the county in order to have
the next meeting represented by
every community and township.
The meeting will again be held
at the Southern Pines High Sch
ool.
