Page Eight THE PILOT, Southern Pines, North Carolina Friday, December 13, 1946. Teacher Pay Issue (Continued from Page 1) pay, bringing the monthly salary to $118.00, for nine months of the year. The 40 percent median in crease would give such a teacher a salary of $1560.00 a year; at the end of 14 years, the teacher would be receiving $3000.00. A unanimous vote was taken at Saturday’s meeting to support the resolution under discussion, and three members were chosen from each district to serve on the state steering committee, which now represents all six school districts. A. C. Dawson described the meeting as being enthusiastic and in complete agreement, but said that some teachers had hesi tated to express themselves open ly, fearing criticism from their home boards. He led a discus sion of this point and made the suggestion, received with approv al, that a poll be taken, if nec essary by personal letter to each teacher in the state, asking for a confidential expression of opin ion “Not only are some teachers suffering from a certain amount of cohersion,” Dawson said, “but the facts are being kept from the public. Politicians are constantly anessing the fact that the state ‘hasn’t the money’ to institute a general increase in teacher pay, Give A Thought To Books....
