C f'HONE 5311 Eye Clinic Aids Blind, Near-Blind Seventy-four adults and chil dren attended an eye clinic held last Wednesday and Thursday by the Moore County health depart ment, and examination revealed that 10 of these were almost or entirely blind. Steps were taken to enroll them at once in the state’s pub lic assistance program, or special rehabilitation programs in line with their needs. Of the others, 16 will be taken to the Duke University hospital, for further examination, surgery or treatment, and 28 were found to be in need of glasses. Through the program of the State Blind commission, with funds appropriated for the pur pose, operations and treatment are given free to welfare depart ment cases, and glasses may be bought at non-profit rates. Where the small charge cannot be af forded, glasses are provided through Lions’ clubs at Aberdeen, West End and Robbins, which have aid to the blind as their especial project. Dr. D. S, Currie, of Duke uni versity, was in charge of the clinic, assisted by Dr. j. W. Will- cox, county health officer, and public health nurses of the de partment. The clinics are held twice a year, and this was the first for 1947. Dr. Davis Speaks At Rotary Club Now your nickel buys a better taste Drink ZIMBA KOLA... best part of the day! Well done, in deed.’ ” Success despite handicaps, an exemplified in the lives of famous persons, was the subject of a talk given before the Southern Pines Rotary club at its Inucheon meet ing Friday by Dr. Thompson E. Teiacher Pay February checks for Moore County teachers sent out last week contained half the bonus voted by the present legislature for the last six months of the present school year. But the tea chers did not feel as rich as they thought they would because a part of the bonus was taken away from them as withholding tax. This tax somewhat tempered the feeling of elation. For example, a teacher holding an A rating with 10 years experience and two de pendents received a bonus of $99.00 for the fourth, fifth and sixth months, but paid a with holding tax on it of $16.30. So the bonus was not so large after all. One teacher’s tax went as high as $50.00. He stat- cult problems of mining' which exist in many people’s minds, and which he declared are partly pro paganda put out by miners them selves to further their own inter ests. He compared the conditions of work in the coal and steel in dustries to show that coal miners worked under better conditions than steel workers. As paymaster in a coal mine for many years, Mr. Gibson said he considered the check off system .of the unions the most vicious of all labor pro blems ^ as it was unfair to the ‘workers.
