Page Eight THE PILOT, Southern Pines. North Carolina Friday,^March 14, 1947. LIGHTED WINDOWS RESULT OF DRIVE (Continued from Page 1) paign begun some time ago, which had to be dropped when outside switches became unob tainable. These may now be se cured. Board Commended At the Tuesday meeting, the di rectors, hearing news of the meet ing of the Town Board with Sea board Airline officials, and the recommended plan to provide au tomatic signals for three danger ous Broad Street crossings, ap plauded the town commissioners for their prompt and effective ac tion in this regard. It was decided also to offer the services of the Chamber of Com merce in any wanted capacity for the success of the spring horse show of the Sandhills Horse Show and Racing association, re garded as a major event of the season and one which will pre sent Southern Pines and the sur rounding locality at their most favorable ' during succeeding years. Chairman John S. Ruggles pre sided over the meeting. In the absence of Herrmann Grover, ex ecutive secretary, Miss Jean Ed- son. board secretary, served also as executive. Vass-Lakeview School Burns Down; Classrooms Sought For 550 Pupils BLUE, CURRIE ON REFERENDUM (Continued from Page 1) liquor question, declaring them ir relevant to the issue. Time Later There will be time for such discussion, he said, after the right to a referendum is estab lished. Both at the meeting and later. Blue declared himself strongly impressed by the size of the meet ing and the number of petition ers. “It is impossible to disregard the avowed wishes of so many,” he said. “They have great weight, and anyone desiring truly to rep resent the county must give them earnest consideration.” Blue Would Regulate Random Junk - Dumping Two bills affecting Moore coun ty were introduced in the House by Rep. H. Clifton Blue last Thursday, according to a special dispatch from The Pilot’s Raleigh reporter. Miss Gertrude Walton. According to one bill, “any per son, firm or corporation” who deposits “trash, litter, garbage, junk, tin cans, waste or other re fuse material” on the property of another would be guilty of a mis demeanor, punishable by a fine not exceeding $50, or imprison ment not exceeding 30 days. The other Blue-sponsored bill would authorize county commis sioners and the governing bodies of municipalities in Moore county to decline issuance of beer li censes, a measure supplementing a previous ruling granting 'authority to issue such licenses. (Continued from Page 1) get new desks and equipment, and ^Iso to confer with Dr. J. Henry Highsmith, of the state depart ment of education, concerning maintenance of- credits for the high school students since all records were lost, and the year must be completed under diffi culties. Erected in 1924 at a cost of $50,000 during the principalship of W. Duncan Matthews, the school building was insured for $40,000 and would cost $200,000 to replace today, the superinten dent estimated. The building had 20 classrooms and an auditorium, and served some 550 pupils from the first through the twelfth grades, with 16 full-time teachers and a county music supervisor. The current county school build ing program called for the addit ion of four new classrooms and a larger cafeteria, to cost $50,000. New Building The school officials plan to go before the county commissioners at once concerning the immed iate errection of a new building, to be ready by next fall if poss ible. The origin of the fire is cloaked in mystery. It appeared to have started near the entrance doors to the auditorium. The co^l fur nace was banked and there was said to be no evidence that it had anything to do with the disaster. Edward McNair, a young man living near by, saw the fire and at once went to Vass and notified Policeman A. R. Laubscher. The alarm, sounding at 11:20 p. m., summoned aril volunteers. The one hydrant could support only two lines of hose, and when these were found to be inadequate help was summoned at once from Sou thern Pines. One truck arrived within a few minutes, but little help could be rendered. Rescue Attempt Most of the power machinery in the agricultural classroom had been moved to the new building, but hand tools had been left be hind and W. E. Gladstone, agri culture teacher, risked his life to save them. He managed to res cue a few but in so doing was al most overcome by smoke, and also cut his hand badly. The flames were rampant for some two and a half hours, but smouldered for many hours after fhat, and firemen were still wat ering down the ruins well into the next morning. Nothing at all was saved from the major part of the building. All the school and office equip ment, the library, and many per sonal belongings of teachers and pupils went up in the flames. Consumed with the auditorium was the handsome new curtain bought by the PTA last year with money raised in the community, and hung just in time for com mencement exercises. Gone, too, is the new movie projector with its screen, in whose purchase the PTA and school recently cooper- bted. A GI class in agriculture has been held in the back classroom Tuesday evening, but no use is known to have been made of the auditorium by anyone. Gladstone, who taught the class, said he per sonally turned out the lights in the classroom about 10:15 p. m., and that everything then appear ed to be in order. Water Used UP The town water supply of Vass was just about depleted by the fight against the fire, and the Vass Cotton mill water tank was put into use. The next day ^ river- water mix ran from faucets of Vass residents, continuing until the lost reserves could be restor ed. The loss of the school is part icularly tragic in view of the needs of the school system all over the county, and the inade- quancy of available funds to meet ythem a subject for discussion among school and county officials for some months. The Vass-Lake- ^^iew school district was one which which did not need a new build ing, though crowded conditions had caused a decision to improve and expand the plant. The build ing was rated as one of the soundest in the system, and one of the most modern despite its 23 years.
