Monday, it turn ed out that two Negro defen dants in bedding - and - cohabi tation cases had married each other and promised to live to gether, consequently prayer for judgment was continued on pay ment of court costs. Defendants were £dward Lee Cooley, of Fayetteville and Ern estine Ferguson, of Southern Pines. Cooley additionally prom ised to support his wife and her child. Similarly charged; Robert Brown and Ruth Ferguson, of this community, were given six naonths’ sentences, suspended on payment of $25 and costs, with conditions of good behavior, ifi effect for the next two years. Judge Rowe faced a full dock et, Monday, with 27 cases slated to be heard, including practically every kind of misdemeanor known to man—or woman. More Auto Cases Cleb Garner, Lakeview, driving while drunk, 60 days suspended, $50 and costs, license revoked for 12 months; Major Clark, Negro, Newport News, Va., careless and reckless driving, colliding with another car causing damage, driv ing without license, six months suspended, $25 and costs, $225 to be paid Daniel Vick for damage to his car, and not to operate a motor vehicle on the North Caro lina highways until a license is obtained. Boele, Southern Pines, speeding, 60 days suspended, $25 and costs; Virginia Hill, Negro, Southern Pines, violation of health laws, prayer for'judgment continued on payment of costs, defendant to go at once to the treatment center at Durham to take required treatment as or dered by the North Carolina health department; Cephus Thompson, Aberdeen, assault, prayer for judgment continued on payment of costs of $22, at re quest of prosecuting witness; Handy Matthews, Negro, failure to comply with previous order of the court, capias returnable Monday; Tom Jackson, case set for trial June 30; Mitchell Russell, Negro, Pinehurst, assault, prayer for judgment continued on pay ment of costs. Clinton Williams', charged with assault and non-support, public drunkenness and assault on a fe male, demanded a jury trial and was bound oyer to superior court, under bond of' $100 for each charge. Roy Cameron, of the county home at Carthage, charged with ^public drunkenness, was given a 30-day road sentence, suspended on condition that he remain with in the county home for the next 60 days, not leaving unless ac companied by an official of the institution. Called and Failed Instanter capias was issued for Vernon Short, alias Vernon Black, charged with driving after revocation of license, called and failed. Also “called and failed” was Guy Cliriton McNeill, charged With driving while drunk. His bond of $100 was declared forfeit- Polio Uhapt er Meeting Is Held, Reports Given Directors of the Moore Coun ty Polio chapter held a meeting at the'’Nurses’ home at Pinehurst on Monday night of this week at which time H. Clifton Blue, chair man of the 1947 March of Dimes campaign for Moore county, gave a report of the funds collected, stating that a total of $6,077.24 v/as raised during the 1947 drive as compared with $6,325.03 dur ing the 1946 campaign. Community Reports The amounts raised by the va rious communities and the local community chairmen were re ported as follows: , Aberdeen, Raymond Wicker, $500; Addor, Mrs. Henry Addor, $30 01; Carthage, Edward .1. Ramsey, $109; High Falls, Thad Fry, $111.40. Lakeview, Mrs. Ben Cooper, $52.28; Niagara, D. D. Cameron, $8.40; Pinebluff, Mrs. W. R. Grif fin, $129.03; Pinehurst, Frank McCaskUl, $1,200; Robbins, Mrs. Sallie G. Allison, $806.55; South ern Pines, Paul C. Butler, $1456.52; Vass, M. M. Chappell, $450; West End, J. F. Sinclair, $158.60; Westmore, J. C. Phillips, $60. Half Stays Here Deduction of $202.75 for cam paign expenses leaves a net of $5,874.49 to be divided, half to be sent to the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, the other half to,be retained for use with in Moore county. N. L. Hodgkins, chapter treas urer, gave a report of the chap ter’s financial condition, saying that during the past year the chapter spent approximately $2,903.97 In carrying on the fight against infantile paralysis in Moore county, in assisting vic tims of polio by paying for their hospital expenses, etc. He stated that the chapter had on hand ap proximately $9,400.00 as of June 1. A report of the meeting held in Goldsboro to map plans to fight infantile paralysis was given by Dr. J. W. Willcox, IVCrs. A. H. Poe and Mrs. Edith Mc Leod. One Case This Year One'csSelif pdlio’was reported in Moore county in 1947, when Herbert McLauchlin. seven-year old colored boy of the Eastwood community was stricken.. He was admitted to the hospital April 27. Reports' from the other patients receiving assistance from the chapter were made. ' The meeting was presided over by Chairman Paul C. Butler of Southern Pines. Present were Ralph Steeds and Howard Sum- merford of Robbins; Dr. J. W. Willcox, Miss Mary Frances Swett, Mrs. A. H. Poe and I^rs. Edith McLeod of the county health department; Dr. T. A. Cheatham and JMiss Ellen Bruton of Pinehurst; Mr. and Mrs. N. L. Hodgkins and Paul C. Butler of Southern Pines; R. C. Fields and H.
