Craig and Mrs. Curtis Bettini enter tained at a miscellaneous shower at Hotel Charmella on Tuesday evening of last week. Little Sara Von Metzger entered with a wagon loaded with attractive packages, which she “parked” beside the honoree. The gifts in cluded many lovely ,and useful articles lor the bride’s home. Mrs. Dock McRae of Southern Pines directed a game, and the hostesses served sandwiches cookies and punch. Around twenty were present. Willie Hilliard's Birthday Willie Hilliard, well-known throughout this ' section as a cheerful cripple who lets nothing get him down, had a red letter day Sunday when the McRae family, with whom he has made his home for the past ten years, assembled to honor him with a big dinner on his birthday anni versary. There were many good (things to eat, including a beauti- tul birthday cake baked by Mrs. Pete McRae, and many gifts. There for the occasion were Mrs. B. C. McRae, in whose home the dinner was held. Miss Helen McRae and “Buddy” McRae of the home, Mir. and Mrs. Pete Mc Rae and Myra, of Lakeview, Mr. and Mrs. Dock McRae of South ern Pines, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Laubscher and children of Vass, and two guests, Miss Betty Lou Spurgeon and Bobby Spurgeon of Southern Pines. Some Fisherman. J-: C. Doss, owner of the local barber shop, is some fisherman. While spending last week at his cottage at Lake Waccamaw, he caught a one-eyed fish, ^s a re sult of whkh he was accused of “slipping up on (the blind side” to land it. The fish, a goggle-eyed perch, was 14 inches long and weighed a pound and a half. Its -one eye was on the left side. Doss caught a 10-pound black fish, also, and many others of smaller size. With Doss a^t the lake were his wife, also Bdbby Hoyle of Vass and his guests, “Dizzy” Sides and “Buzzy” Yarborough, both of Kannapolis. Birthday Party Mr; and Mrs. Pete Patterson entertained at a birthday party at their home in Southern Pines Friday night honoring his sister, Agnes, of near Vass on her tenth birthday. Those present included Mrs. Eugene Smith and son of Vass, Mr. and Mrs. Anghs Nor- tori or Niagara, and the Patterson children, Gary and Donnie, Agnes came home Sunday after a visit of about three weeks. Personals Mrs. Erin Stephenson and granddaughter, Janet Parsons, arrived from New York city Mon day to be the guests of Mrs. B. C. McRae and family for several days. Mr. and Mrs. Garland Batts and son of Alexandria, Va., and Miss Obera Holliway of Durham call ed on Mrs. G. W. Brooks and Miss Eloise Brooks Saturday as they were returning from a visit in Texas, krs. Batts, the former Inez Holli'way, roomed with Jes sie Brooks (Mrs. Arthur L. Read of East Bridgewater, Mass.) dur ing their four years at Meredith College and visited in Vass. Mr. and Mrs. N. Vick Keith and baby, Nancy, of Sanford were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Griffin at their lake side cottage in Lakeview. Joining them Sunday afternoon were Mrs. W. H. Keith cSf Vass and daughter, Miss Glennie Keith of Raleigh, Mr. and Mrs. Bryce Grif fin and family, Mrs. G. W. Grif fin, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Griffin and son of Florida, and Miss Mary Lynn Fields of Sanford. Mr. and Mrs. John McDermott, newlyrteds, spent the weekend with John’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. M. McDermott, and left Mon day for Spartanburg, S. C., where he has accepted a position follow ing his graduation. Mrs. George McDermott, Jr., of Chapel Hill was here for the weekend, also. On Sunday the McDermotts and their guests and Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Edwards, Jr., and children enjoyed a, picnic dinner at A. G.’s camp on Little River, about seven miles from Vass. Mrs. J. E. Byrd returned to her apartment at Hotel Charmella Sunday after spending several weeks visiting her son, Frank, in teaksville and the Royce Byrds in High Point. Royce, his wife and two children, Zoy and Will, came home with her to spend several days. Mr. and Mrs. Coy Saunders of Cojeridge were with them for the day Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Julian Smith and baby son, Johnnie, of Raleigh vis ited Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Smith of Vass Route 2 and Mr. and Mrs. Wayland Blue of Southern Pines Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Griffin and Mrs. G. W. Griffin visited Mrs. Richard Griffin of Hamlet, who is a patient at a Laurinburg hos pital, during the weekend. Mrs. W. B. Causey returned home from Moore County Hospi tal last week and is getting along nicely. Mr. and Mrs. James Idol and sons, Jimmy and Douglas, Colin Callahan and Miss Helen Calla han, all of High Point, and Mrs. Ed Schwartz, Mrs. H. L. Ball and Betty and Lovia Ball, of Fayette ville, were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Callahan. Other visitors during the day in cluded Mr. and Mrs. June McCas- kill and children, Donald and Mary June, of Carthage Route 3, and the three Callahan sons, Howard, Edison and Mack, and their fafKilies. Miss Sarah McLeod of South ern Pines called bn Mr. and Mrs. D. A. McLauchlin Monday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Bettini and Mrs. T. J. Smith left Tuesday night for Lynn, Mass., to attend the wedding of Mrs. Smith’s daughter. Miss Margaret Bettini, and George P. Fulton, which is to take place on July 4. Mr. and Mrs. A. L. McNair and children, Gweh and Donnie, of Southern Pines spent the week end with Mrs. McNair’s mother, Mrs. O. C. Bullock, and family. Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Gladstone left Saturday for Forsyth, Ga., to visit her mother. Mrs. J. B. Simmons of Candor came Monday to spend a week with her mother, Mrs. Annie B. Gilliland, and Mr. and Mrs. W. J. .4Uen. Misses Lucilk Frye and Hazel Jessup, “Dutch” Hudson and Charles Cameron were weekend guests of Charles’ aunt, Mrk Kate Scarboro, in Greensboro. Miss Mary Rebecca Beasley-of, Route 2, Miss Ruth Gillis of Cam eron Route 1, Howard Gschwind, Henry Klingenschmidt' and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gschwind en joyed homemade ice cream and cake at the Gschwind home Sat urday night. Mr. and Mrs. James Jeffreys of Raleigh stopped overnight with their brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Griffin, Thursday, as they were return ing home from a vacation in Miami, Fla. Little Barbara Baker, daugh ter of Deputy Sheriff and Mrs. Claud Baker of Sanford, was the weekend guest of her grandpa rents, Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Baker. Barbara came down with her aunt. Miss Opal Baker, who is taking a business course in San ford. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Doss, Mr. and Mrs. Manly Rues and Mrs. J. T. Doss went to King Sunday to attend a birthday dinner given for Tom Wolff, brother of Mrs. J. T. Doss. Sheriff Glenn Buchanan of Sanford visited his sister, Mrs. A. D. McLjaudhlin, Saturday. Mrs. Cora Dees and daughter, Vera, of Winston-Salem spent Saturday and Sunday with the former’s sister, Mxsi Earl Good man, and family. They visited Mrs. S. B. Oakley at Broadway Saturday, and were accompanied home Sunday by Dorothy Pees, who had been visiting Nancy Goodman for three weeks. Mrs. L. O. Henning (Annie Smith) returned from Lee Coun ty Hospital in Sanford Saturday. She expects to be. at her home on Route 2 for a month before returning for an operation. Mrs. I. P. Ray of Buie and Mrs. O. O. Dukes of Lumberton visit ed their brother and sister-in- law, Mr. and Mrs. C. P. McMil lan, Sunday night. Paul McMillan came down from Selma Monday and C. P. accompanied him to Charlotte. Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Painter and children went to Raleigh last Fri day to attend a barbecue supper given by a Sunday School class of Clyde Chgpel Baptist Church, which they attended while living in Raleigh. They enjoyed seeing many of their friends. Mr. and Mrs. Edwii^ Finch and Ed Grady visited rfelatives in Wilson during last weekend. Mr. Finch’s niece. Miss Finch, re turned home with them for a visit. Mrs. Page McAulay and daughter, Katharine of Candor called on Miss Mary Beasley and R. P. Beasley Wednesday, on their way to Raleigh.' Mrs. N. N. McLean, Miss Agnes Smith, T. J. Smith and Hugh Mc Lean spent Sunday in Dobson with- Mr. and Mrs. Neill M. Smith and son. Mack. Joan Chappell left Friday night for Tampa, Fla., to visit her uncle and aunt, Major and Mrs. John Bell. Her chums, Marilyn Wood and Betsy Chappell, asked Joan to bring them some souven irs. Marilyn wants some water from' the Gulf of Mexico and an alligator, and Betsy will settle for some Florida sand and a cocoanut. Mr. and Mrs. Jefferson Baker and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Gar ner visited Lacy Garner in Rich mond during the weekend. Lacy was seriously injured in ah auto mobile accident sevei;'al weeks ago and -yi’as treated first at Moore County hospital, then at Veterans’ Hospital in Fayette ville, from which he was trans ferred to a government hospital in Richmond. Since going to Rich mond he has fully regained con sciousness, but does not remem ber anything that happened since the accident until that time; Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Jessup of Mt. Airy visited Mr. and Mrs. George Blue Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Keith and family spent Sunday in’ Greens boro with Mr. and Mrs. John Clark. Luther Crouse of Greens boro and Carthage was a recent visitor in the Keith home. Mrs. A. .D. McLahchlin, who suffered a heart attack about three ' weeks ago, entered Moore County Hospital last Saturday for treatment. Miss Mary Mc Lauchlin of Maxton is spending some time at home during her mother’s illness. “Buddy” McRae left Monday for New Y^rk city. Mr. and Mrs. A. M. (Cameron went to Raleigh Friday and brought their small granddaugh ter, Susan Irby, home with them for a week’s visit before her mother comes to take her home to Atlanta, Ga. Scouts Initiated Into Order of the Arrow Several Boy Scouts of this vicinity were initated as members of the Order of the Arrow, nat ional honor camping fraternity of the Boy Scouts of America, at a council campi at Crabtree park jast week. They were Stephen Van Camp, Sjjfiuthern Pines; Arthur Rowe, Everett L. Guion and Keith Marks, Aberdeen; and Franklin D. Brown, Robbins. Also initiated Was Bill Hewett, council field executive.
