“Jewel Box” Will
Be Open Soon
The Jewel Box, a new ice
Tarheels Seek to Increase Farm Funds
cream bar and sandwich shop,
will open officially Sunday,
June 20, in its brand new build
ing. on South East'.Broad -street,
and those who visit it will cer
tainly say its name is justified.
It’s a real little beauty of a
place, in a color scheme of light
and dark blue with the most mod
ern “fixings” inside and out. A
bright blue awning is a colorful
note against the old brick of the
Williamsburg-style front, and in
side, blue tables, a blue-and-red-
rubber tile floor, fluorescent light-1
ing against a creamy-white ceil-j
ing and—most important—a'
thoroughly modern soda fountain;
give a cheery welcome.
The Jewel Box will be open,
from 9 a. m. until after the late
movie, serving sandwiches, soft
drinks, and Coble’s dairy pro
ducts, including ice cream in
many delicious flavors.
It is the enterprise of C. P.
'Everest, Jr., who ‘will have
Tommy Grey assisting him, and
Simplico Canico in the role of
chef.
E. V. Perkinson was the con
tactor.

A Place For The People Needed In
The U. N. Building Plan, Says Morgan
Carlyle Morgan, special writer
for the Christian Science Monitor,
is the man who started the idea
of a People’s Section for the
United Nations. In a recent ar
ticle entitled “Reminder for
Architects” he takes up the ques
tion of the new quarters for the
world organization and, as one
of the People, ,asljs the question:
“Where do I come in? Will there
be a place for me?” The article
continues as follows;
(From The Christian Science
Monitor.)
Who am I? Well, if you put it
one way, I’m just the jiellow
whose name is signed over this
article. But just you put it an
other way for a moment.
Who demanded, during World
War One, that that chapter in
butchery should ba. the last?
Who demanded, during World
'Wlar Tw(o‘, thdt the statesmen
should get busy and plan a new
house of peace—and along more
weatherproof lines than they did
;n 1919?
Who saw relatives, friends, and
brothers and sisters without num-
million
ber say good-by on
doorsteps?
Who read the messages of sad
tidings from distant field and un
known -sea?

Who turned from despair to try
again, and again and again if
need be, to make these sacrifices
count not only for victory but
for peace?
Why mp.
But -I see you recognize me
now. Take me one way and I’m
just a solitary citizen. Take me
another way and you find some
thing of me in every citizen in
every country, and something of
them all in me. I am the person—
on Fifth Avenue and Main Street,
on Nob Hill and the Ringstrasse,
in Piccadilly Circus and Red
Square—whose future relation
ship with the U. N. will decide
whether or not your buildings
were worth the drawing.
That’s why I ask, is there a
place for me?
Now it may be that there is.
But, if not, it may be that the
Planning Committee of U. N. has
overlooked this need when indi
cating what buildings ,and ac
commodations it believes the U.
N. headquarters: should include.
In that case, you are working
within limitations. If these limi
tations preclude the utmost in
hospitality, and indeed much
more than hospitality, for me and
my kind, they ought to be sent
back to the U. N. authprities
with a persuasive note from W
K. H.
You’ll know what to. write. You
always are looking for th^ totally*
new approach to architectural
problems. You have asked for it
in the building of the U. N. head
quarters—something newer even
than in Rockefeller Center. But
the U. N. buildings are more than
arclfttecturle-^th^ need to re
flect also a totally new political
approach. So, if the Planning
Committee didn’t specify it, you
can ask them: “Gentlemen, didn’t
you mean to build the people into
the U. N., and shouldn’t we plan
them into it as we design United
Nations City?
Preferably, the provisions for
people—I use the word to dis^
tinguish us from diplomatists, ex
perts, advisors, secretaries, and
even the likewise mysterious sten
ographers attached thereto—
should be housed in a relatively
modest building on the U. N.
plot.
I woudn’t mind paying an ad
mission fee to the theater. In
fact, I would be willing to make
a donation appropriate to my fin
ancial circumstances to help to
pay for a people’s headquarters in
United Nations City. 'Won’t you
pass this word along to the Plan
ning Committee? Pr must many
more people write you first?
The U. N. Jias already made
provision for the public, in a lim
ited and formal sort of way, both
at Lake Success and Flushing
Meadows. But at United Nations
City couldn’t we—^the people of
the U. N. really get acquainted
with each other? I’m sure we’d
become fast, friends.
It ought to be accessible di
rectly from the street. Personally,
I’d like to enter a softly lighted
foyer, expansive enough to seem
quiet even when accommodating
a large number of people.
From here I’d like to wander
ihto a large reading room equip
ped with literature pertinent to
U. N. affairs. If I had finished
reading, and it wasn’t time for
the Security Council meeting for
which I had a ticket, then I’d
step into the cozy darkness of the
U. N. movie theater.
Here I could watch the films
about peoples in many lands and
reflect on the way in which their
customs, industry, culture, reli-
#on, needs, 'land achievements
might affect U. N. problems.. Then
I could spend a few minutes in
the gallery , among the portraits
of peacemakers.
Or maybe another time I’d
attend the lecture by a U. N.
spokesman in the main auditor
ium, or join some group in one
of the several smaller discussion
rooms.
■What I’d like most of all abou^
the quarters would be the fact
that I could use them juSt about
as I did my 'public library—no
cards >of admission, except to
special meetings' or reserved
rooms. I could come and go as
I pleased, observing the responsi
bilities of sober citizenship, and
feel I was part of the U. N. and
the U. N. was part of my every
day life. ,
Four Boys Returned
To Morrison School
Four Negro lads, 12 to 14 years
of age, from Morrison Training
school were picked up here by
city police Sunday and sent on
back to the school, from which
thethey were taking an informal

authorities.
They had left the school Sat
urday and walked the railroad
track to Southern Pines, 4)end-
