Many of the child ren had a good time at the nearby playground and older boys and girls swam or waded in the lake One little fellow sat down in a mud bole and got up with pants that were white in front and black in the back, but he was soon more comfortably fixed a pair of bathing trunks that were o. k., even if they did belong to a much larger person. The attend ance count showed 128 present from Aberdeen, Cameron, Car thage, West End, Hoffjnan, Rob bins, Pagle Springs and Vass, with Vass leading in attendance for the second consecutive time. The Rev!. Jlohn Cline announced a mass meeting in Carthage Tues day, August 12, with a visiting Fellowship team from Elizabeth City to be present. T. Roy Phillips, recreational director, was assisted by Miss Alicia Lane of Carthage in an outdoor program of games. Ladies of the church served refresh ments. Woman's Cub Meets Excellent attendance for a ‘‘vacation month’’ marked the July meeting of the Vass Wo-, man’s club, held Friday night at the home of Mrs. W. C. Leslie with Mrs. H. A. Borst as joint hostess, and the program, given under the direction of Mrs. W. H. Keith, chairman of the' Am^er- ican Home department, was an unusually informative one. Mrs. N. N. McLean presided vfer the business session, and Mrs. A. G. Edwards, Jr., Mrs. D. F. Cameron and Mrs. Keith took part on the program. Mrs. C. P. McMillan was prize •winner in an interesting contest. Miss Louise Leslie assisted the hostesses in serving delicious re freshments. New Members Four new members were wel comed into the Methodist Wo man’s Society of Christian Ser vice when it met Monday night in the home of Mrs. W. B. Gra ham. They were Misses Sallie and Bessie Cameron, Miss Blanche Sturdivant and Mrs. Edwin Finch. Miss Louise Leslie presided and Mrs. C. P. McMillan conducted the worship service and led the program, which aws on summer recreation for children, Mrs. S. R. Smith, Mrs. H. A. Borst, Mrs. C. L. Tyson, Mrs. C. J. Temple and Mrs. W. D. Matthews took part. The hostess served a fruit salad course. Early Bird Bill Hall, a farmer who lives up the Union Road way, is in line for catching “the worm” or some other choice morsel. On Monday of thirs week, before most other farmers had started “pri ming” tobacco, he was putting in his second barn, the first having been barned last week. By the latter part of this week curing will be getting into swing throughout this section. Both to bacco and corn are looking finC; although some damage was done by wind and hail Monday after noon. Personals Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Edwards and Mr. and Mrs. C. P. McMillan had a pleasant surprise Thursday when their niece, Mrs. W. S, Ryan (Esther Auer) and her hus band from Dallas, Tex., popped in for a call. The Ryans had gone by plane to New York on their vacation and w,ere making the teturn trip in a new car which they bought while there.' Their time was limited as Mr. Ryan had to be back in Dallas by Saturday evening. Mrs. Ryan is the daugh ter of Lillie Edwards Buice, a former Vass girl. Mrs. G. W. Brooks fend Miss Eloise Brooks had supper with Mr. and Mrs. Jarvis Brooks in Stoford Friday evening. H. Mrs. June Harrington is re covering from, an operation in the Moore County Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Neil McKay of Atlanta, Georgia, visiting rela tives, in the county, were in Car thage last week. Mrs. W. A. Cook of Southern pines, spent last week with Mrs. Gilliam Brown. Mrs. Leroy- Lee is in the Moore County Hospital due to a recent illness. A bridge luncheon was given by Mrs. Colin Spencer, Mrs. Mic- Phail, Mrs. Ed Muse, MIrs. Sam Miller, Mrs. C. T. Grier, Mrs. L. R.
