If you are one of the 80,000 to bacco growers in the two Car- olinas and Virginia who became members of the Flue-Cured To bacco Coopdrative Stabilization corporation last year, and plan to place tobacco . in the corpor ation and accept the last year, and plan to place tobacco in the cor poration and accept the loan this year, it will be well for you to check and see if you still have the identification card issued to you, according. to a reminder from the state department of agriculture. Pointing, out that before any tobacco grower s eligible to place tobacco in the corporation and ac cept the loan, L. T. Weeks, sec retary of the corporation, said it is necessary that he be a member. All who purchased a share of stock last year were issued a stock certificate and an identifi cation card, he said. This identi fication card serves as the grow er’s evidence that he is a member and that he holds a share of stock. If he was not a member last year, he may become a member by purchasing te least one share of common stock which will en title him to all of the corporation’s benefits and privileges'. He need not purchase stock each year, provided he can produce evidence that he is a stockholder. Many growers who became members in 1946 have lost their identification ■ cards, Mr. Weeks said. A duplicate card may be obtained by writing to the Flue- Cured Tobacco Cooperative Stab ilization Corporation, 411 Fay etteville Street, Raleigh. When the grower is marketing his tobacco and finds that it is desirable to place some tobacco in the corporation and receives a loan on it and he does not have an identification card, th^n it will be necessary for him to buy i another share of stock before he is eligible to place his tobacco in the corporation. Warehousemen and officials of GOOD WILL From our Vass correspon dent comes a little follow-up to our story last week of Ed McPhatter, Negro tenant on the A. V. Autrey farm, who wa(s thrown from his mule onto the highway, where he was struck and injured by a car; it's a story of interesjl to those who like to hear of good will, rather than ill will, among races and men. One of the first to reach the accident scene was a white man, a Durham archi tect, who stopped to offer aid. Finding neither Autrey nor his son was at home, the architect — a complete stranger to them all- brought Miss Thelma Autrey to town to summon medical aid, welnt back and waited at the roadside until the ambu lance came, and offered to take Mrs. Autrey to the hos pital. She could not go so he went himself, returning to bring a report of McPhatter's condition. The driver of the car which struck McPhatter was a Negro minister, returning to Raleigh from South Caro lina, where he had been holding services. He, too, of fered aid, and went to the hospital, rendering all pos sible service. Kindergarten Will Move To Church, Add First Grade Seawell Bids In Sharpe Apartment John C. Seawel, Jr., on the Black Apartment house at Carth age, bettered by the necessary five per cent a previous bid of $12,- 000 made by George Carter, of Carthage, at a forced sale by the sheriffe July 21. ^ Though the io-day period for higher bids runs out this week, it is not known whether the Sea- well bid will stand, as it is sub ject to a show-cause hearing Au gust 6 when the three firms who forced the sale must justify their action. Restraining orders against the sale, setting the date of the show- cause hearing, were secured by Van B. Sharpe, owner, and sign ed by Judge Henry Stevens of Rockingham, but were vacated shortly before the sale by Judge Paul B. Edmondson of Goldsboro, special superior court judge sit ting in Rockingham at the time. In the restraining orders Sharpe evaluated the apartment building at $35,000. Judgments for some $3,000 stand against it. Liens are also held by the gov ernment for tax defaults. Space ih the basement of the Baptist church, leased last week to Miss Eleonor Edwards, will be used for enlargement of her kin dergarten and also for the addi tion of a first grade, according to announcement made this week. The school will be non-denomi- national in character, with the first grade planned to measure i up to all standards of the state department of public instruction. Besides being centrally loca ted, the facilities include three large bright rooms and a play ground, Indoor and outdoor equipment were moved this week from Miss Edwards’ home on Ridge street, where she has suc cessfully opeir^ied her kinder garten for the past year. She will open her school Sep tember 3, and in the meantime is taking applications at her home for admission of children two and a half to seven years of age. Miss Edwards has conducted a summer play program for kinder garten and primary age children for the past month at the pri mary school building on Bennett street, with Miss Blanche Ed wards assisting. The program was closed last week as a safety imeaisure against polio. Though parents had expressed no alarm, it was deemed best to close in view of the fact that some of the children had had indirect ex posure to the disease, Miss Ed wards said. She took kindergarten work at Bessie Tift college, of whicli she is a graduate, and continued with postgraduate ■ study at New York university. She taught for a while in her home town of Jacksonville, Fla , then joined the WAC, in which) she served as a crytographic technician with the signal corps in New Guinea and the Philippines. Returning home with a battle star, ‘ she was dis charged in December, 1945. She came to Southern Pines in April, ’ 1946, and was employed for a tim,e at Fort Bragg. She opened her kindergarten here last September. She has since been joined here by her sister. Miss Hilda Ed wards, who is also d war veteran after serving with the Red Cross in the European theater, and who is continuing her Red Cross ser vice with the local chapter.
