Marr of Can- oustie, Scotland, whose engage ment was announced in May, will be married September 20. Soon after their marriage they will come to Pinehurst where they will occupy the Tree Tops apart ment in Plymouth cottage. They are both well known in the Pine hurst colony. Mr. Marr is now on a visit to his ancestral home in Scotland. Back Home Jerry Ashton has returned from The Inn at Lake Placid, N. Y. where he was employed, and reopened Jerry’s Grill in the Mar ket Square building. While he was away there was no restau rant in the village in operation and the villagers were pleased to have ,a local ‘‘place to eat out” ;'.gain. Yadkin Golf M^t Richard Smith with a net 71 won last week’s Yadkin golf tournament. Thomas H. Currie was in second place with a net 72. The tournament was medal play individual 3|4 handicap. Birthday Parly Little “Skeeter” Stevens, small son of Mr. and Mrs. S. T. Going and Coming Miss Margaret MacDonald, of the staff at the General Office, and Miss Arlene Kennedy of the Carolina bank, Pinehurst, left Sunday to spend this week at Kentucky Inn, Myrtle Beach. Robert Peck who has been the house guest of Mr. and Mrs. Guthrie Smith for two weeks re turned Sunday to his home in White Plains. Mr. and Mrs. John Biggers and daughter Patricia are guests of Mr. and Mrs. Hulon Cole. Miss Elizabeth Macauley of New York and Mjss Lida Tunnell of Cleveland are spending sev eral weeks’ vacation at Gurnet Cottage. The young people of The Com munity church enjoyed a picnic outing at Aberdeen lake Thurs day night. Softball Game Two added attractions on last week’s recreation program' was a softball game played between Pinehurst and Aberdeen Tuesday night, and a local game between members of The Brotherhood class of the Community church Sunday school Friday night. Large crowds attended both games. Rev. Roscoe L. Prince is on vacation from his pulpit during August and Col. Frank M. Thompson, retired Army chap lain, who bought the Thomas Black cottage on Midland road and resides there, will serve as supply pastor for the month. Mrs. Roy Kelly is organist while Miss Eloise Wicker is on vacation. Mrs. Robert Harlow left last week on a business trip to New York. Mrs. Martha Humphrey left Tuesday after visiting her sister, Mrs. W. W. Simpson, and Col. Simpson. Judge and Mrs. Frank Arm strong and daughter, and Mr. and Mrs. David Armstrong and family are spending several weeks at Caswell beach. Miss Eleanor Fresh of Hickory, a member of the Pinehurst school faculty, has been spending ^few days here as guest of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Edson. At The Beach Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Ehrhardt, Jr. and children left Tuesday fo: a week’s vacation at Ocean Drive, S. C. Thompson has returned from Boston and with her children is occupying The Casements, her parents’ winter home here. Swimnling Party Mrs. John Zelie and Mrs. W. A. L. McKeithen were joint host- fesses Saturday evening at a din ner and swimming party. Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Gibson and young daughter Ann spent the weekend in Raleigh. Mrs. Iris McGinley has been the guest of Miss Ola Lilly at her apartment in the Bank building. Mr. 6nd Mrs. R. S. Tufts, thfeir Mrs. Rockham Dies In Detroit Mrs. Mary A. Rockham, 82, widow of Horace H. Rockham, founder of many educational and civic projects throughout Michi gan, died Tuesday, July 22, at her Detroit residence after a long illness. For many years Mr. and Mrs. Rockham had been among the prominent residents of the win ter colony at Pinehurst, where they owned a home. Mr. Rock ham died in 1933. Among outstanding Rockham iphilanthnopies were the Rock ham Memorial building at De troit; the Detroit Zoological Park foundation, the Fenton Community house and the Hor ace H. Rockham School of Grad uate Studies at the University of Michigan. The university has re ceived more than $10,000,000 in Rockham gifts. Mr. Rockham, as a young at torney drew up incorportion papers for the Ford Motor com pany and made a $5,000 invest ment. These shares later sold for $12,500,000. The Rockhams used their financial success to devote their lives to aiding church, char itable and educational projects. Mrs. Rockham, daughter of Col. Dexter Horton and Lavina Hor ton of Fenton, O., married Horace Rockham in 1888. Her wide interests are shown by organizations in which she held membership, many of them charter or honorary member ships: the Detroit Golf club and toe Silver Foils of Pinehurst, the Engineering Society of Detroit, the Ingleside club. Women’s City club and Parmen’s club of De troit, and many others. She was a member of the Christian Science church. Funeral services were held from the residence Friday with burial in Evergreen cemetery, Detroit. Surviving are two sis ters, Mrs. Mabel Patterson of Poughkeepsie, N. Y., and Mrs. C. L. Bussey, of Detroit, also sev eral nieces and nephews. Carthage Water Is At Low Level The Carthage water system is suffering from the recent pro longed dry spell, and Carthage citizens have been asked not to wash their cars during this week and possibly next. While precautions are being taken there is believed to be no cause for alarm, said Mayor W, D. Sabiston. This is the first time in four or five years the supply has been lowered to this extent, and it is expected to be at normal again within a short time. While rain has been plentiful in the south end of the county during the past couple of weeks, there has been very little in the north end from which the springs supplying Carthage are fed. Picnic Supper The following enjoyed a picnic supper at Boyd’s Lake in Ham let last Thursday night: Misses Margaret MacDonald, Margaret Lee, Evelyn Garner, Flora Ellen Cameron and Gene Bradley, Bill McKenzie, James Garrison and Art Williams. Roger Frye of Washington is on a visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew J. Frye. IMr. Frye is a court recorder in the nation’s capitol.
