Of the 176 wardrobes in the finishing room at the time, some were a total loss, while others were damaged by smoke and water. No estimate of the loss was given., Hand Injury Dougald Cameron of Route 2 suffered a severe injury to his right hand Monday morning as a result of the cold weather. The water pump on his truck was fro zen and after getting the motor started, Dougald caught hold of the fan belt to try to make the fan work. Just as he did so, the fan started and the belt cut one of his fingers off and another one almost off. He and J. W. Smith, who was accompanying him to the hospital in Sanford, stopped, in town on their way up Monday morning, but we haven’t heard whether it was necessary to amputate the second finger. A Daughter Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Campbell are happy over the arrival of a daughter, Brenda Jeannette, on January 29 at Moore County hos pital. The baby lacked only a half ounce of weighing seven and one-half pounds. Mrs. Campbell and Jeanette left the hospital Monday and are spending some time with the former’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Reynolds. Attend Funeral Mrs. W. T. Cox, Mrs. R. L. Wed dell, Mr. and Mrs. S. R. Smith, Mrs. W. H. Keith, A. L. Keith, Miss Retha Mae Cox, Mrs. W. C. Leslie, Mrs. H. A. Borst and Miss Louise Leslie attended the fun eral of T. R. Moffitt, which was held in Steele Street Methodist church in Sanford at 3:30 Thurs day afternoon of last week. Mr. Moffitt died Tuesday night, after a long period of declining health. Well-known in Vass, Mr. Mof fitt had resided in Sanford for many years, going there when the town was little more than a country village. With several brothers he founded the Moffitt Iron Works company which oper ated .until a few years ago. He united with Steele Street Metho dist church almost 61 years ago— a month after its organization— and Tielped organize the men’s Bible class, teaching it for a num ber of years. The class was later named in his honor. His late wife was formerly Sallie Bynum, one of the well-known “Bynum sis ters’’ of Vass. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Ben W. Smith, and one sister. Dance For Polio Fund Defying the sleet and cold, a goodly number assembled at Hotel Charmella Friday night to dance for the polio fund, and in the pleasant get-together soon forgot the weather. Sounds good, doesn’t it! We’ve half a notion to start over and do the whole column in rhyme.) Chairman Cal lahan raised $40 without any hol lers. The school hasn’t been dancing for the fund, but we hear that a considerable amount has been raised by some of the grades, and we’ll let you know about- it as soon as it is thought best by Prin cipal West. The New .Look The town office, where Mrs. Bessie J. Griffin and her hus band, G. E., carry on their work, is taking on the “new look” and it is most becoming. The walls have been painted a light green, the furniture has been given a coat of varnish, and there is a roll of new linoleum waiting to be laid. Venetian blinds are to be a part of the new outfit, also. Weather Wins Vass-Lakeview school did not suspend work the first of last week as so many schools did, but ran through Wednesday. How ever, the weather won out Thurs day, iwth the youngsters enjoying a holiday, but it was back-to- school for them Friday. The ad ditional sleet and snow which fell during the Weekend caused them to get another holiday Monday, with the return to school depend ing upon road conditions.
