Pursues, Nabs Driver After Sideswiping When Arthur Atherton’s car was sideswiped by another in front of Jack’s Grill last Friday afternoon, and the other driver just speeded up and drove right on, Atherton did not pause: he followed right after, and brought the other car to a stop near the Southern Pines Warehouses. Turned over to the city police, the driver, Solomon Gillis, Negro,- of below Aberdeen, was charged with drunken driving, careless and reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident. The service, for all Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, also marked the local observance of National Boy Scout Week. The charter, presented by L. W. Hewett, field executive, was re ceived by B- C. Nolan, scoutmas ter, in behalf of the church and the troop. Archie Ferguson, as sistant scoutmaster also took part. Bobby Craft gave a history of the Boy Scout movement, for the benefit of assembled friends and parents, and the following boys took part in a responsive’readihg: Toe Smith, Charles Merrill, Billy Horner, Joe Horner, David Wood ruff, Joseph Womble and Adrian Ferguson. Each boy in turn read a point of the scout law, with its meaning in Boy Scout terms. The pastor. Rev. J. Lamar Jackson, made re sponse with an illustrative pas sage from Scripture. When Deryl saw a boy rid ing a bike he was pretty sure was his own, stolen January 25, he slopped the lad and en gaged him in conversation- The boy offered to sell him the bike for $10, so Deryl in vited him around to Holli day's restaurant and went in, ostensibly to get the money. Once inside, he had his dad, W. B. (Chick) Holliday, call the police, who came and found that the bike was in deed Deryl's. The 12-year-old rider will bef given a hearing in juve nile court. J. W. Furr, 16, of near Lakeview, who admit ted complicity hi the theft, will be tried for larceny in recorders court. Five high school students whose essays on “How the UN May Be Strengthened” were adjudged best in their class, will present them for final judging over WSTS at 11 a. m. Saturday. Reading their essays on the half-hour program will be Niel Bradley, Dorothy Gale, Howard Scott (Scotty) Burns, Jr., Bryce Garner and Richard Patch. Their work will be judged on form,' content, clarity of expres sion and method of presentation, with the Rev. F. Craighill Brown, Miss Eleonor Edwards and Mrs James Boyd serving as judges. The contestant adjudged to have done the best work will be award ed a medal. The essays were written as a speech class assignment, in which the entire class, taught by Miss Phoebe Witherspoon, took part Th iswas the local high school’s participation in a statewide pro gram among high schools for dis semination of information con ceining the United Nations. Judging will be done at once and the awarding of the medal to the winner will be part of the program.
