Guest In Finch Home Pharmacist Barney Greene, of Chaffee, Mo., is spending this week with Mr. and Mrs. Ed win Finch, of Vass, Rt. 2. He is a former shipmate of Mr. Finch, a lieutenant commander, retired, of the U.. S. Navy. With Mrs. Greene and their little daughter, Mr. Greene has just returned from a tour of duty in Puerto Rico. They flew from Puerto Rico to Norfolk, Va., and Mrs. Greene and the little girl are visiting in Missouri before the family goes on to their new station, Bethesda, Md. Friday's Storm Is Worst of Summer The severest electrical storm of the summer struck the Vass section last Friday afternoon knocking out power and tele phone service and doing consid erable other damage. Lightning struck the new home of Misses Sallie and Bessie Cam eron at the tip of the roof at the rear of the house and played around through the building. It knocked a hole in the plastered wall of the ■flooih. nearest the place where it struck, then en tered the upstairs hall, making holes in two of the walls, and as a parting thrust, jumped' to the living room on the first floor and removed some plastering there. On Arch Blue’s place two cows were killed by lightning, accord ing to reports. Mrs. Lee Thomas, who lives about a mile outside the town limits on Union road, was can ning in the kitchen of her tile- block home when lightning struck it. One outside wall had some blocks torn out, and in the kitchen, which was extremely hot, the “eyes” or lids of the wood stove were knocked out of place, causing the room to be filled with smoke. A sugar bowl on the table was broken to pieces. A three-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas was on a cot, and her arm, which was resting on the metal rail, was burned. Mrs. Garland Savage and her children, who with Mr. Savage live in one of the new homes in the Aiken development east of Lakeview, had gone across the road to the home of Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Baker before the storm came up, and she was thankful that she wasn’t at home, as the lightnng struck a tall pine near the back of the house, then pro ceeded to break off sections of as bestos siding here and there on the house. A dog under the house was killed. On John William Smith’s farm at Lobelia the corn was blown over until it was a tangled mass. Observes 85th Birthday Mrs. W. J. Gameron “Aunt Sue” to scores of relatives and friends, observed her 85th birth day Tuesday. Ill since July 4th', she left home for the first time since then to spend the day with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. J« B. Cameron, at Manly. Although she was unable to sit up all day, she was happy to have her three children, Mrs. W. T. Cox, Mrs. S. R. Smith and Mr. Cameron, with Mrs. Camer on, Mr., and Mrs. Eveleth Rich ardson and little Ann, and a sis ter, Mrs. Catherine Shaw of Southern Pines, there to enjoy the sumptuous birthday dinner with her, which Mrs- Cameron and Mrs. Richardson had*prepar- ed. Dr. Herman Parker who was called home from Berkeley, Cal., by the fatal illness of his sister, Mrs. Sam Evans, left Sunday for California to resume his summer study there. Dr. Parker, a mem- bey of the faculty of Wake Forest college, was sent by the college to a California university for special study. He expects to re turn around the first of Septem ber. J., spent Sunday in Pinehurst with Mr. and Mrs. Jim McCaskill (Helen Klingenschmidt) and family. Mr. and Mrs. Jefferson Baker and baby of Sanford- spent part of last week with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Baker. Jefferson was nursing a sore finger which he had torn so badly while mov ing a motor that 12 stitches were required. Mrs. A. G. Edwards spent Mon day and Tuesday in Raleigh with her father, J. S. Bundy, who is ill. Mr. Bundy’s condition is im proving. Miss Lois Smith is at her home on Route 2 after spending several weeks teaching in summer school at Kannapolis, where she was a member of the faculty last school year. Mrs. Sam Lewis of Onancock, Va., arrived Thursday of last week for a 10-day visit in the home of her mother, Mrs. W. T. Cox. Her brother, Sidney Cox, who is here from Miami, Fla., on a two weeks’ vacation, visited a sister, Mrs. M. B. Willis, at Ac comae, Va., from Friday until Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. H. A.
