Frank Cameron on Tuesday evening of last week, with the president, Mrs. H. A. Borst, pre siding- Mrs. W. A. Muse was leader of a program on Puerto Rico. Mrs. Borst gave the call to worship, the Rev. T. J. Whitehead led the prayer, and Mrs. C- P. McMillan and Miss Louise Leslie gave read ings. Miss Bessie Cameron con ducted the mission study from the textbook, “Sommitted Unto Us.” Mrs. Colin G. Spencer of Car thage, chairman of the Moore- Montgomery zone, spoke to the group, using as her subject, “We Are the Lights of the World.” Plans were made for holding the fall zone meeting on October 15 at 2 p. m. at the Vass Metho dist church. Mrs- George W. Carter of Car thage and Mrs. Whitehead of Aberdeen were additional visit- M. McDermott attended a shower given by Mrs. J. M. Kelly and daughter. Miss Flora Mae Kelly, at their home Saturday evening honoring Mrs. Jack Pope of Rae- ford, who before her recent mar riage was ^iss Clara Byrd of Burlington. and friends in Albemarle, Biscoe and Star. The baby'has been named Linda Dar nell. Mrs. Buchanan Dies Mrs. John A. Buchanan, 76, of Broadway, mother of Mrs. A. D. McLauchlin of Vass Route 2, died in Lee County hospital Friday morning after an extended period of ill health. Funeral services were held at 3 p. m. Sunday from Broadway Presbyterian church, of which she was a member. Among the friends from this section who attended the funeral were Mrs. R. G. Rosser, Mrs. W. H. Keith, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Smith,' Dan McNeill and Mrs. Alex McFadyen. Unusual Accident Barry and Loftin Grant, aged about seven and five, respective ly, were pulling weeds in the gar den of their home Friday after noon. Barry picked up a hoe that was in the way and tossed it aside, and it struck Grant, cut ting through the top of his left ear. Two badly frightened little boys sent out an alarm that brought their mother running from the house. Dr. Rosser was called, but he advised taking the child to Moore County hospital to have the wound dressed. Grant was able to return home with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Lof- 'iin. Woman's Club The Vass Woman’s Club will meet at 7:45 p. m. today, Friday, in the home of Mrs. E. L. Finch, with Mrs. R. E. Beasley as as sociate hostess. The Public Wel fare department, of which Mrs. H. A. Borst is chairman, will have charge of the program. Mrs. West Is Hqstess Mrs. W. H. West was hostess to the Vass Baptist Women’s Mission ary Union at her home in Lake- view Thursday evening. Mrs. R. L. King, vice president, presided in the absence of Mrs. H. L. Hen drick. Mrs. King was leader of a foreign mission program, which she was assisted in presenting by Mrs. L. M. Dixon; Mrs. F. L. Tay lor, Mrs. Ben Cooper and Mrs. G. W. Brooks. Mrs A. G. Crissman, who is in charge of collecting clothing for, foreign relief in the organization, requested members to take their clothing donations to the Bap tist church Sunday night. Mrs. West served block ice cream and chiffon cake. After 35 Years Will Byrd, a former resident of Vass who now lives in Biloxi, Miss., arrived Monday for his first visit in 35 years. He is visit ing his sister, Mrs. W. D. Wilon, and other relatives. Mr. Byrd is a brother of the late John Byrd of Vass. Guest Speaker ■W. E. Horner of Sanford, edi tor of The Sanford Herald and lay leader for the Fayetteville district of the Methodist church, will be guest speaker at the 11 o’clock service at the Vass Meth odist church next Simday morn ing. His subject will be “The Layman’s Opportunity and Re sponsibility.” Mr. Horner is a forceful speaker and his message will be of interest to all laymen, regardless of denomination. The public is cordially invited to hear him. Youthful Visitor Danny McGill pt Lakeview, 3- year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. W. D. McGill, was the weekend guest of his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Mrs. Redga Thomas went to Durham Friday to spend a few days with her sister, Mrs. Riley B. Reece. Mack Thomas motored to Durham with his mother, and was accompanied on the return trip by his grandmother, Mrs. R. L. Oldham, who had been with her daughter since the death of Mr. Reece on July 31. Mrs. A. V. Autry and Mrs. G. M. McDermoItt spent Thursday of last week in Asheboro, visiting Mr. and Mrs. A. V. Autrey, Jr., and Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Alex ander. They had-lunch with Mr. and Mrs. Alexander. Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Tyson and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Griffin re turned Saturday from a week’s vacation at Fontana Dam. They took trips to several other places of interest while there, including Knoxville, Tenn. Misses Lucille Frye and Lula Belle Boggs, James Hudson and Charles Cameron spent Sunday at White Lake. Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Thomas, their son, Tommy, and daughter, Doris, of Durham visited Mr. and Mrs. Thurlow Evans Sunday af ternoon.
