Vance Rowe according to the degree of their offense. Some were truck drivers, others Car drivers. Fastest was Otis Mel ton, clocked at 70 miles an hour, who received a 60-day sentence suspended on payment of $50 fine and costs. Others convicted of speeding, their sentences and fines (all had to pay costs) were as follows: Kennon F. Wise, Shelby, $20; Willie Lytch, Negro, Southern Pines, 60 days suspended, $50; Frank B. Mullis, pharlotte, $25; Clyde W. Lauchlin, Charlotte, $35; Mark Homer Wiggins, Dur ham, $20; Joe L. Collins, Carth age (also charged with improper lights), 60 days suspended, $40, ordered not to violate speed laws in next 12 months; William D. Currie, Red Springs, Rt. 1, $25; Samuel H. Plexico, Jr., Salisbury, $20; Clyde S. Bumgarner, Sea- grove, $40; Leon E. Davis, $25. , Prayer for judgment was con tinued for Horace Brawley Webb, Ellerbe, Rt. 1, on payment of costs. Drunken Driving % Four defendants appeared on the docket this week on charges of drunken driving. Edward Lee Cooley, Negro, of Aberdeen, re ceived a 60-day sentence, suspend ed on payment of $100 fine and costs (license to be revoked 12 mbnths). Ellis McKenzie demand ed a jury trial, which will be giv en him the first Monday, in Oc tober. So also did Paul Eniest Doby, of Cameron ,and Robert Hardy Fore, of Cameron, Rt. 4, who was also charged with driv ing after revocation of license and careless and reckless driving. Bond for McKenzie, Doby and Fore was set at $200 each. Student Council Will Meet Tuesday John Beasley, president of the Student Council of the Southern Pines High school, asks that coun cil members attend meeting to be held in the council room at 10:0 a. m. Tuesday., The meeting will be a prelimi nary to the start of regular activ ities, and is being held in order to plan for them. TAKES TRAINING COURSE Sfc. William P. Short, of South ern Pines, who is stationed at the Quartermaster School Center at Darmstadt, by which through in tensive training over several weeks he was prepared for a po sition as supply clerk of supply sergeant. He has been in the army for five and one-half years, serv ing as truck driver, club mana ger and supply sergeant. TO NCEA CONFERENCE Supt. P. J. Weaver and A. C. Dawson, Jr., of Southern Pines schools will go to Catawba college, Salisbury, today (Friday) to at tend the ■ NCEA leadership con ference to be held today, Satur day and Sunday morning. Mr. Dawson, a past president of NCEA and chairman of the legislative committee, will preside over some of the sessions. Convicted of careless and reck less driving, William Robert Mc; Gill, of Vass, was fined $25’; George Vance Threadgill, Negro, Southern Pines, 30 days suspend ed on payment of $25; and Wood- row Norton ,of Lakedale, also charged with colliding with anoth er car, received a 60-day sentence suspended on payment of $25— all with costs. Ernest Core, of Aberdeen, received a three months’ sentence suspended on payment of $50 and costs on a charge of unlawful possession of home brew and wine for sale. Kate Utley and son James, Negroes, of Aberdeen, were charged with unlawful pos session of wine for sale. Pleading guilty to possession, but not for sale, they received 60-day sen tences, suspended on payment of $25 and costs each. All three were placed on probationary condi tions for 12 months. In cases involving five Negro defendants of Carthage, in court on a variety of charges rising from a shooting scrape, four— Good Cobb, Joe Hampton, Alex Smith and LeRoy Mills—were ac quitted, while Frank Flint was sent to the roads for 12 months as being the one who actually fired the shotgun. Other cases on the 39-defend ant docket: Sandy Lee Gaines, Negro, Pine hurst, forcible trespass, 60 days suspended on payment of costs, and public drunkenness, 30 days suspended, .also on payment of costs; J. B. Pressley, Carthage, un lawful possession of illegal whis key and transporting, 30 days sus pended, $10 and costs; Garland McPhail, Cameron, Rt. 1, public drunkenness, unlawful possession of non-taxpaid whiskey, $10 and costs; Curt Scott, Aberdeen, un lawful possession of non-taxpaid whiskey for sale, six months on the roads suspended on payment of $75 and costs, not to violate pro hibition laws for two years. , Hurley McBride, Negro, Pine hurst, gambling, demanded jury trial, trial _set for first Monday in October with appearance bond of $100; Sarah Burns, Negro, South ern Pines, violation of prohibition laws, prayer for judgment contin ued on payment' of costs; J. B. Ritter, Negro, Carthage, Rt. 1, trespass, allowing hogs to run a large destroying property, 30 days suspended $25 and costs, not to violate stock laws during next 12 months.
