Fenced-In Area The tract was recently fenced in with the strongest of cyclone fencing, at a cost of $1,000, by the town for storage and protec tion of its vehicles and mechani cal equipment. There is plenty of space for equipment which will be issued to the National Guard battery and it is anticipated that this arrangement will receive ap proval of the federal authorities until the battery can later take possession of grounds and a budd ing of its own. It is expected that a perma nent, garage, to be used as tem porary armory, will be built with in a year, and that within two or three years the battery will have its own federally-built standard arpiory. Personnel Officers of the unit are Captain Carpenter, commanding, and Sec ond Lieut. C. S. Patch, Jr., pla toon leader. Men's Doubles Winners In the men’s doubles finals played Tuesday evening, Alex Parker, of Maysville, Ky., and Barney Smith, of Greenville, Tenn., subdued the stubborn team of Page Choate and Frank de Cos ta, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 5-7, 6-0. The vis itors, at Fayetteville for the to bacco market, stayed over after the market’s closing in order to compete in the tournament, and treated the local fans to a fine ex hibition of tennis playing as they earned their trophies. Playing also Tuesday night, Mary Lou Jones downed Mrs. Marion de Costa 6-3, 6-3 to add the Sandhills Open women’s sin gles trophy to her collection, a sizeable one for a 16-year-old girl. The young lady is state junior girls’ champion, now entering women’s events and an excellent future is foreseen for her in state tennis circles . Trophies Awarded Trophies awarded Tuesday night to winners and runners-up included those in the women’s singles, men’s , doubles and also the women’s doubles played ear lier, in which Audrey West Brown and Mary Lou Jones defeated Mrs. Dot Choate and Mrs. Marion de Costa. With a winner or runner- up trophy headed her way Sunday night. Miss Jones will have col lected three in this tournament. Other trophy-winners were Da vid Page, winner and Jimmie Col lins, runner-up, boys’ singles; Del- mar Moser, of Sanford, winner, and Gene Poe, runner-up, junior men’s singles. Presentation of trophies was made by Mayor C. N. Page. Sunday’s nights mixed doubles events will bring to an end an ex citing tournament filled with up sets and surprises. Starting Sat urday, September 10, it was mark ed by beautiful -yveather the first week ,but rain, or the threat of rain, caused postponement of the finals events slated for last week end.
