Page Eight THE PILOT—Southern Pines. North Carolina Friday. April 28. 19S0 FOREST FIRES (Continued from Page D on the way there stopped to help fight a woods fire in the heart of Pinehurst. It was quickly control led with aid of the Pinehurst Fire department. The fire at Eagle Springs was left to the tower crew there, as the fire fighters from the Southern Pines tower went to Old Bethesda cemetery. Fire originating in a shavings pile of the Aberdeen Lumber - company was spread by the wind over some four acres close to the cemetery. No damage was done to the cemetery or church. During the afternoon the crew divided forces to fight the two worst fires of the day, one on property near Carthage, ad joining the Colin G. Spencer place, the other off Highway 211 below Aberdeen. The fire near Carthage wlas one of the most stubborn they had ever encountered, burning mostly over hardwood timber- land, Warden Davis said. After fighting from: 2:30 to 8 p. m. they thought it was under control, but it broke out again at 2 a. m. Mon day and they fought for another two hours and a half. About 65 acres were burned. The fire below Aberdeen, cov ering some 200 acres on land be longing to Mrs. D. H. Johnson of Ashley Heights, and Hening Blue of Aberdeen, was started by someone who had been fishing, and built a. fire beside a lake. M. D. Pleasants, of Aberdeen, dis trict forest warden, had gather ed up a crew of volunteers and had it pretty well in hand by the time the Forest Service fighters could get there. It took the whole bunch working hard, however, to get it entirely out by 9 p. m., and to save several homes which were tlireatened. During this time a call came to West End but the men were all busy and could not leave. T. C. Auman, West End orchardist, and his men and equipment hand led it alone. Also during this time two calls came from Eagle Springs, which were handled by the Eagle Springs tower crew. Warden Davis said he thought these were all different fires but was not sure, as he had not had time to receive reports. The huge fire which raged for eight days over thousands of acres on the Fort Bragg reservation was believed Sunday to be either out or under control. Several hun dred Army men were detailed to fight the blaze day and night. Junior Freeman, towerman and smoke tracer at the Forest Service tower at Hoffman, said that “fires are occurring every day” in the maneuver area, but that they are being handled with efficiency and dispatch by the Army fire cre.ws. On spotting a fire from a tower, Junior phones the Army crew, giving the location, and the equip ment is immediately rushed to the scene. One particularly tough fire lasted three days on Camp Mack- all, was ,finall|y controlled but broke out again for a brief battle Sunday afternoon. Two fires con sumed some Army equipment but no one was hurt. District Forester Jamies A. Pip pin, of Rockingham has issued a blanket warning to all the coun ties of his district, warning of the extreme hazards imposed by the dry windy conditions. All burn ing permits have been indefinite ly revoked.
