Pelton, ’02, Attends Alumni Reunion
Of Historic Biltmore Forestry School
A A Open Meeting
At Clubroom Tonight
Lloyd L. Woolley, Jr., gradua
ting last Wednesday night from
the Conservatory of Music of the
Peabody Institute, Baltimore, Md.,
WEIS the recipient of one of the
highest honors awarded in the
class—the $100 Harold Randolph
prize “for studentship and musi
cal achievement.”
P. P. Pelton, Southern Pines at-
jtorney, took part last weekend in
what must certainly have been
ope of the most unusual events of
the year for North Carolina.
This was a reunion of graduates
of the Biltmore Forestry school,
first forestry school ever held in
the United States, which was con
ducted on the Vanderbilt estate
near Asheville, from 1898 to 1912..
Head of the school was Dr. Carl
Mr. Woolley was one of 12'A. Schenck, a German, imported
graduates in school music, win
ning the bachelor of music de
gree after four years of study at
Peabody. He, is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. L. L. Woolley of Southern
Pines. A graduate of Southern
Pines High school, he attended
Duke university for one semester,
then entered the U. S. Navy and
served for three years during the
war. He was on the Ticonderoga
throughout her historic four of
duty in the South Pacific theatre.
He is married to the former
Miss Carol Thomas, daughter of
Mrs. Bert Thomas and the late Mr.
Thomas of Southern Pines.^^
William Schuman, composer
and president of the Julliard
School of Music in New York
City, was the commencement
speaker for the Peabody finals,
held at Concert hall in Baltimore.

men. I ever knew.”

year course to
men.
One of these was Mr. Pelton,
who on graduation in 1902, went
to Colorado to practice his new
profession, but found it too rugged
for the state of his health at that
tJme and later turned to the study
of law.
He had seen none of his fellow
graduates of the Biltmore school
until last weekend, when some
who had been writing to each
other carried through an idea
they had had for some time. They
met at Asheville. They visited
Biltmore, where they had worked
and studied so happily 40 or 50
vears ago. They went together on
a trip into the high mountains, to
see and enjoy again together the
forest they had loved—finding it
no longer a wilderness, but a
well-marked-out recreation area.
In a deep mountain glen, “Pink-
head Valley,” still untouched in
its natural beauty, they affixed
a bronze plaque to a boulder in
honor of their teacher. Dr.
Schenck.
Perhaps- the most remarkable
part of the story is that Dr.
Schenck is still living, ip Ger
many! His former students are all
writing him about the reunion,
and he will receive a picture of
the bronze plaque.
They can also tell him—except
that he no doubt already knows—
that his small forestry school in
spired other, greater ones in col
leges and universities of the
United States, as his graduates
went out fired with new know
ledge and eager to spread the for
estry gospel. To them^ and to Dr.
Schenck, may probably be direct
ly traced the growth of forestry
as a science and a profession of
high standing in this country to
day.
Some 35 graduates attended the
reunion last weekend, of more
than 100 believed to be still liv
ing. They came from California,
Maine, Georgia and all states be
tween. They had stories to tell of
their careers, many of them spent
in the lumber business or other
(EorestrS^-related industry, or in
the government service where
their knowledge was of great
value. . .
A number of the alumni, inclu
ding Mr. Pelton, were accompan
ied by their wiyes.
Nuptial mass will be held Sun
day at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Vic
tories church for Miss Dolores
Derby, of Auburn, N. Y., and Pvt.
Howard R. Briggs, of West South
ern Pines and Fort Dix, N. J. The
pastor. Father Walter Kuhn, will
officiate.
