I' I Page Eight Rowe Family Sets Record With Five Graduations; Parents Present At Four Judge And Wife Stay On Move At Commencement Time Elsewhere in The Pilot is a story of a family with three mem bers graduating, and several who had two—^but five in one family, that of Judge and Mrs. J. Vance Rowe of Aberdeen, is believed to set some sort of a record. What’s more. Judge and Mrs Rowe at tended four of the five gradua tions, and would have gone to the fifth except it was at Chicago and just couldn’t be fitted into the crowded schedule. 'On May 29, their daughter Gladys graduated at Woman’s col lege; June 5, their son Joseph Vance, Jr., from the University of North Carolina school of law; June 6, their son Arthur, at Aber deen High school; June 11, their son Frederick Douglas, taking a BS in animal industry at State college. On June 4 came the commence ment they most regretfully miss ed—that of their son-in-law Bob Corey, graduating in commercial art at the University of Chicago. They just couldn’t make it to that one. At the Aberdeen High school commencement they heard high tribute paid to another son, Lieut. Lawrence Rowe, Moore county s first casualty of World War 2. A memorial award of cash was established in his honor in June, 1949, to recognize high qualities of citizenship and scholarship. This year it went to Doris McMas- ter. Lawrence Rowe left the Uni versity of North Carolina, where he was a law student, to enter the Army Air Force. The award was established by a donor who knew him in university days, but whose identity is being kept secret, by request, from everyone except the school superintendent—even from his parents. It is soon to be ex- $1.95 Pints $3.15 Fifths 86 Proof „n ._JKm M UBS nODOCT tnMsomon oin. sax snAioHr as NBIIBAL SPHnX BItmUB IMBI MAK itiMinBaiBMiiuni panded to a full university schol arship. Judge and Mrs. Rowe have two other children, Riley, a State col lege graduate, now a mechanical engineer with an insurance com pany in Greenwood, S. C.; and Eleanor, who spent last year tak ing a business course in Raleigh and will soon take a position there. Of the five young people grad uating this year, the Rowes have reason to be proud of each. J. Vance Rowe, Jr., is remain ing at Chapel Hill to brush up for his bar exam August 1. He and his wife, the former Mary O’Neal, will spend August in Boston with her family, then return to South ern Pines where they own a home on Kensington road. The son will enter law practice with his father. Arthur, who is 17, is also plan ning to follow his father into the law, and will enter the University at Chapel Hill in the fall. Arthur was elected president of his school’s first Student Council, formed last year, and at the com mencement exercises was present ed the citizenship' award, given annually by the Masonic lodge. Douglas will have a different sort of partner^ip with Judge Rowe, who is also a farmer. ’While the new graduate is at summer school at State, assimilating more knowledge, with emphasis on live stock, a home will be built for his wife and himself on the Rowe farm near Southern Pines. As a starter, he has received a unique sort of graduation present from his dad—16 sheep from Texas, soon to be followed by 25 more from Montana. Douglas was married last Sep tember 1 to Miss Charlotte Smith of Laurinburg. Gladys, an education major at Woman’s college, is spending the summer as a counselor at Old Mill camp, the Girl Scout camp near Greensboro, and in September will become a sixth grade teacher in Winston-Salem. The son-in-law. Bob Corey, re garded as affectionately as any of the sons, has already secured a promising position with an adver tising company in Chicago. His wife Catherine, like her sister a graduate of Woman’s college, will come next week to visit her pa rents at Aberdeen for a short while. Bob’s family lives in Los Angeles, Cal. The Rowes saw all their boys who were of military age enter service, and Bob also is a young veteran. When it was time for Riley to be discharged from the Army, he contrived to have this happen in Shanghai, China, where he was then stationed, and then took a position with UNRRA for a year. He came home in Janu ary, 1947. The boys also have notable rec ords in Boy Scouting. Douglas was Moore county’s first >Eagle Scout, following the reorganiza tion of scouting in the 30s follow ing a long lapse. (An early South ern Pines troop had Eagle Scodts soon after World War 1.) Arthur is an Eagle Scout, and assistant scoutmaster, now acting scoutmas ter, of his Aberdeen troop. He will attend the National Jambo ree at Valley Forge, Pa., June 26- Julv 4. $25,000 GIVEN '■(Continued from Page 1) i the Moore County budget for the year 1950 be, and the same is hereby, amended so as to make the receipts from the ABC stores for said year be $165,000, instead and that of the said Premo.
