In “For Heaven’s Sake,” com
ing to the Carolina theatre, Sun
day through Wednesday (four
days) January 14-17 at 8:15 p. m.
with a Tuesday matinee at 3, Clif
ton Webb takes over the way he
took over “Mr. Belvedere” and
leaves the spectator limp from
laughter.
It is’a richly varied perform
ance with Webb as an angel in
civilian clothes on a terrestrial as
signment, assisted by Edmund
Gwenn, also an angel in a busi
ness suit, and a couple of young
sters waiting to be born. Webb
gets into a series of complications
that give him a chance to be
come an “angel” for a play;
Montana cowboy who looks and
acts so much like Gary Cooper
he is a riot; a playboy trying to
resist a siren; and a tough guy
who knocks out Jack Larue.
In support are Joan Bennett,
Robert Cummings, Joan Blondell
and the child actress Gigi Per-
reau. It is a blend of gags, satire
sophistication and surprises.
Jimmy D. Hobbs, district super-
visoE-of the Occidental Life Insur
ance company, Southern Pines, is
attending the annual managers’
meeting of his company in their
home offices in Raleigh.
Coming together for this meet
ing are Occidental leaders from all
over the United States and Cuba.
Mr. Hobbs, in addition to his sup

the company’s top honor group,
the Laurence Lee club, named in
honor of Occidental’s president.

It’s not one but three Red Skel
tons in M-G-M’s “Watch the Bird;
ie,” hilarious new picture coming
to the Sunrise theatre Sunday and
Monday. In the new M-G-M com
edy Red is seen as Rusty, the he
ro; Pop, his zany father; and
Grandpop, who has a way with
the ladies!
Skelton also has two luscious
leading ladies in the laugh-loaded
film in the persons of Arlene Dahl
and Ann Miller. It’s Miss Dahl’s
third appearance in a Skelton pic
ture, following on “A Southern
Yankee” and “Three Little
Words.” Ann Miller, last seen in
“On the Town,” now leaves hey
dancing shoes behind to play a.hi-
larity role as Miss Lucky Vista, a
beauty-prize winner with more
allure than brains.
In the supporting cast are Leon
Ames, who recently scored in
“Crisis,” Pam Britton,' one of
Clark Gable’s friends ih “Key to
the City,” Richard Rober, last seen
in “Dial 1119,” and an eye-filling
trio of starlets—Jacqueline Duval,
Paula Drew, Georgia. Pelham-
who provide targets for Gremd-
pop’s appreciative eye.
The story casts Skelton as an
amateur photographer who in an
effort to save Miss Dahl from a
pair of villains experiences one
howling mishap after the other,
climaxed by a wild chase in a two-
story straddle truck.
The picture was directed by
Jack Donohue and produced by
Harry Ruskin.
