Page Eight THE PILOT^Southerh Pines, Nortli Caroltna Friday, January 12. COLEMAN (Continue<i,rrom Page 1) tical ideas are asked to submit them. . . _ Admiring their spacious new of fice, toward the furnishing of which a fair beginning has been made, the directdrs heard with pleasure that some income is be ing made there f6r the Chamber. With Mrs. Emily Scheipers, secre tary, in charge, business services ^lre being offered, non-competitive with other local businesses, and a good response has' already been noted. Public stenography, mim eographing,; addressing, etc., are charged for at regular rates. TTiese are being used now mostly by vis itors to town but. are available to all local businessmen. Credit Reports' Credit inquiries are also com ing in and, with the resumption of Merchants Association services under Chamber' auspices, Mrs. Scheipers is‘making the reports as needed. The Merchants Associa tion retired recently as an inde pendent organization and its di rectors cleared it of aU debts' be fore turning it back to its original sponsor, the Chamber of Com merce. John von Schlegell, appointed to head the new Merchants Asso- cia-tion' bureau,’’Said he will an nounce his committee members shortly, and hopes to have repre sentation'from’all three interested towns. Southern Pines, Pinehurst and Aberdeen. ■ A working organ ization serving all three is plan ned. . Whether the AAA, to which many local hotels, restaurants, service statjions and other busi nesses belong, is playing a fair part by US Highway 1 brought forth considerable discussion. It was felt by several present, on good evidence, that Highw^s 301 and 15 are getting the lion’s share of the association’s promotional efforts. With US 1 in better shape than ever before, it was strongly felt that some means should be found to prevent the diversion of tourist travel from it. Some plans for accomplishing this were stud ied. Financial: Report Details of the moving of the Chamber office, and its cost, were given by President Coleman, along with a complete financial report dating back to the time he took office in October. Expendi tures through December 31, total ing $1,447.41, have included $517 paid on old bills; $529 for Christ mas lighting, which included la bor, and additional wire, sockets and bulbs, all now stored in the basement till next December; rent, secretary’s salary, postage, office supplies, and other items. Now scraping the bottom of the money barrel again, the Chamber can do with the more than 50 per cent of dues which remain impaid, he stated, spurring the directors on to continue their collection cam paign. A bookkeeping system is in pro cess of being set up by Garland McPherson, he said, to go into op eration probably this week. Present were President Cole man, Mrs. Scheipers, and directors Garland Pierce, George Pottle, DEPENDABLE and PROMPT Laundry Service Dry Cleaning Service • WET WASH • ROUGH DRY • THRIFT-T • BACHELOR SERVICE • FAMILY FINISH • SUITS • DRESSES • HATS • RUGS • DRAPERIES Carter’s Laundry & Cleaners, Inc.
