BEER-WINE (Continued from Page 1) wine, 3,473. Majority against beer—662; against wine, 887. Slightly more than 6,000 persons voted. The elections board met Thurs day morning to certify the vote.. The official totals may be slightly different from those given above. These will be given in The Pilot next week, along with the pre cinct votes. , As last year, the highest “dry majorities were rolled up in the upcounty precincts of Ritters, Spencerville, Highfalls, Bensalem, Robbins and Deep River, rated by ABC officers “the worst in the county for all types of liquor law violations.” The control side won four pre cincts out of 17, as opposed to only three last year. Again favoring continued beer and wine sales were the Southern Pines, Pine- hurst and Aberdeen precincts, which among them pay more than half of all the taxes in the county, largely on account of the resort interests concentrated in the Sandhills region. Transferred from the dry column, where it landed by a decisive majority in 1950, was the precinct of Pinebluff —favoring beer and wine sales this year by a scant majority of three votes. Total Vote Smaller Most of the other precincts showed a slight ^shifting toward the control side, though not enough to change the proportion ate votes to any considerable ex tent. The total vote was some what smaller than last year. The decrease showed up badly in the Pinehurst and Aberdeen precincts, in each of which about 100 fewer people voted than did last year»^ Southern Pines precinct turned out its biggest vote in history. A total of 927 persons voted, 29 more than in August 1950—also a record vote at that time. Five towns in the county are now eligible to hold their own elections, four by virtue of being incorporated municipalities of 1,000 or more population. These are Southern Pines, Aberdeen, Carthage and Robbins. The fifth. Pinehurst, though uiiincorporated, won this privilege through a spe cial act of the 1951 General As sembly, -in a double-barreled bill which also knocked out the 60- day limit law for Moore county, on request of the drys. No Time Element Now , Though Allied Church League representatives agreed to the com promise bill so no other special election could bar the holding of their keenly-sought beer-wine vote, it is apt to work the other way for them. Any of the five towns may now hold their own votes without regard to a time element in connection with any other special election in the coun ty- Whether any of the other towns are planning their own elections yet could not be learned this week. In Carthage, nerve center of the Allied Church League, it would be a bitter campaign, with the result a tossup. It is not thought likely that Robbins will essay such an election, in view of Tuesday’s almost two-to-one dry majority there. It is considered anybody’s guess as to how the municipality of Ab erdeen would vote, as a large part of its pro-beer-wine majority was laid,to the resort-minded citizens of suburban Southern Pines who happen to be in the Aberdeen pre cinct. and the youth have told officers tha]t they would be unable ^ to identify the men even if they were apprehended. The two sup plied only vague descriptions of the soldiers and were unable to recall military markings on the command car. The woman, wife of a soldier and now living in New York, did not report the incident until two days after it happened. This, also, has made investigation difficult. Sheriff McDonald said that while nothing has been gained from investigations, the case is far from being closed. Classified Ads FOR SALE: RCA table model ra dio and record player. Four of the soldiers raped her on the grounds of a home near the church, whose white occu pants said later they “heard i shot” but thought it a backfire and did not investigate. The Ne gro youth, son of the Rev. Charlie Williams, pastor of^ the church was held at gunpoint as the frightened woman submitted. Later, in the truck, two m-ore soldiers raped her, Mrs. Artes told the sheriff. Only one of them did much talking and she des cribed his speech as “queer,’ which Sheriff McDonald sMd hi took to mean the man spoke ii broken English. In the dark, she faces. The provost marshals of Camp Mackall and Fort Bragg were called into the case, along with the Army’s Criminal Investigation department. They assisted local law enforcement officers for week, beginning August 17, when the victim reported the attack Army investigation is now contin uing elsewhere. “Whoever did it is gone now,” Sheriff McDonald said in noting the difficult aspects of the case. Some 110,000 soldiers were in Moo-re and two adjoining counties for the maneuvers, and they dis persed August 27.
