Gains in the Southern Pines dis trict were more than twice those cf the runner-up, Pinehurst,: which showed a net increase of 22. Total gain in white schools for the nine-district Moore County system was only three, which was wiped out by a loss of 21 in the Negro schools—an overall decrease of 18. Practically all Negro schools in the county showed a definite loss or barely appreciable gain. West Southern Pines, the Negro school in the Southern Pines district, gained four, while the white school gained 43, enough to se cure an extra teacher. Last year these figures were 509 total—121 high school, 388 ele mentary. I At West Southern Pines enroll- jment reached 430, as compared with 426 last year. The high school lost four, numbering 111, while the elementary department gained eight, totaling 319. At Pinehurst, high school en rollment (white and Negro) stay ed the same, 187, while the ele- rrentary jumped from 471 to 493. In figures compiled for the white schools of the Moore Coun ty system, four districts showed sains while five showed losses. The Aberdeen white scHools were the fastest-growing, jumping from 634 to 655. a gain of 21. Highfalls gained 20, from 278 to 298; Robbins 18, from 869 to 887; and Westmoore five, from 426 to 431. The Cameron district showed the largest loss, its white enroll ment declining from 526 to 498, a loss of 28. West End lost 12, 'from 535 to 523; Carthage lost 11, from 634 to 623; Farm Life lost nine, from 248 to 239, and Vass Lakeview lost just one, from 531 to 530. Total for white schools of the I Moore County system for last year was 4,681, for" this year 4,- 684—a gain of three. Total number of children this year in all schools of all three systems, at the end of the first month, was 7,920, a gain of 51 over last year. Elementary enroll ment totaled 6,144, a gain of 65. High school enrollment was 1,- 776, a net loss of 14. County Needs To Put On Speed In Bond Drive Accordng to an announcement by E .C. Stevens, chairman' of the County U. S. Savings Bonds com mittee, $34,325.25 worth of Series E, F and G defense bonds have been purchased in Moore county in the period September 3 through October 27. The current bond drive contin ues through November 13 and the county quota is $70,000. With 80 percent of the 10-week reporting period gone, only 49 percent of sales quota has been at tained in Moore. ‘There is still time for Moore county to go over the top,” the chairman said. “In order to show the many young men in our coun ty who have joined the fighting forces that we at home are en deavoring to do our part in the national defense effort, our coun ty must exceed its quota.” Mrs. Sally Shelton Dies At Broadway Mrs. Sally June Rosser Shelton, sister of Dr. R. J. Rosser of Vass, died Monday morning at her home in Broadway at the age of 78 years. She had been ill for some time. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning from Broadway Presbyterian church and burial was in the Broadway cemetery. Mrs. Shelton was born in Har nett county, daughter of the late Mary Kelly and Joe Rosser. She had lived in the Broadway section all her life. Surviving are one son, Preston L. Morris, of Broadway; two brothers. Dr. Rosser of Vass and T. R. Rosser of Route 7, Jonesboro Heights Station; a sister, Mrs. M. J. Cameron of Selma, and several grandchildren and great-grand children.
