S. Blodgett and- H. A. Jackson, who scored 31-31- 62. R. D. Buchanan and Stuart Cutler with 33-31-64 were the second place winners; and the three teams tied at 65 for third olace were Donald Parson and A. T. Roberts, K. C. Kennedy and C. L. von Tacky, and A. N. Derouin and H. K. Hatfield. The Country Club women’s tournament, Medal Play, Total Net Score of Pair, also played on Monday, was won by Mrs. R. M. Pearse and Mrs. E. M. Hales with 79-84-163; second place winners were Mlrs. Richard Hellmann and Mrs. John von Schlegell with 81- 84-165. The winners in the Silver Foils mixed foursomes played Tuesday were: 1st Division: Mrs. J. O. Hob son and J. D. McConnell 38-38- 76-8-68; Mr. and Mrs. R. M Pearse 44-39-83-13-70 won in a tie for second place, with Mr. and Mrs. Edward Stevens 40-40-80-10- 70; 2nd Division: Mr. and Mrs. A. K. Schoepf won with 42-40-82-17- 651 second place winners were Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Hunter 42-44- 66-18-68; 3rd Division: Mrs. G. T. Dunlan and W. D. Tucker were ♦he winners with 51-45-96-28-68 in a tie wHh Mrs. A. N. Derouin and T. A. Lynch 46-43-89-21-68. The Intermediate Girls’ Auxili ary was hostess to members of the Woman’s Missionary Union of Ives Memorial Baptist church Monday evening at the church. After routine business the girls presented a program on “Prayer” in the form of a play. Taking part were: Lorraine Morgan, Jeanette VanBoskerck, Mary Jane Peele, Mary Alice Parrish, Carol Baker, Barbara Ann Conrad and Barbara Williams. The play was directed by Mrs. F. R. Goodnight, leader. Norwood visiting relatives. Mrs. J. R. Lampley returned home with them after spending the week with her sisters, Mrs. Algie Parker and Mirs. Ray Parker. Mr. and Mrs. J. L. DeYoe spent several days in Durham last week with their daughter. Miss Mar guerite DeYoe. Property Bought, Expansion Planned Property immediately adjoining the Clark & Bradshaw Esso Serv ice, fronting along West Connecti cut avenue at the rear of the sta tion on West Broad street, has been purchased by Virgil P. Clark and Carl N. Bradshaw from M. Clayton McAdam. Mr. Clark said this week that an eventual expansion of their business is planned, though work Will probably not begin until the summer. WSCS Meets The Woman’s Society of Chris tian Service of the Methodist church met Tuesday afternoon with Mrs. Earl Lampley. Mrs. W. R. Griffin was co-hostess. The program was “Let Courage Rise With Danger,” with Mrs. Ehrman Pickier in charge. Tak ing part were: Mrs. J. W. Pickier and Mrs. Steve Hupko. Mrs. W. A. Parsons read the Scripture les son and Mrs. R. P. Gibson offered a prayer. Mrs. Lewis Marts, president, presided over a business session. The hostesses served cake and coffee to the 15 members and three guests present. Entertain Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. War ren entertained at a cocktail party Tuesday evening honoring their daughter, Mrs. Donald Washburn, who arrived Mondav with her two daughters from Con necticut for a week’s visit. Graham Johnston is spend ing three weeks with his mother, Mrs. Alex Roberts, and Captain Roberts prior to his departure for San Francisco and overseas duty in the Far East. Louis R. Porteous arrived Mon day from Portland, Me., to join Mrs. Porteous at their cottage here. Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Plunkett left Monday for a two weeks’ visit in Nassau. Mrs. J. C. Bertrand is on a week’s visit to Washington and ■NTew York. On her way north. Mrs. Bertrand stopped off at Rich mond, Va., to spend the day with her daughter Joan, on her birth day. Ray H. Taylor, Jr., is in St. Au fcustine. Fla., competing in the Club Golf Championship being plaved there this week. W. A. Leland McKeithen, pres ident of the North Carolina Bar Association, will attend the one- day conference of State Bar pres idents to be held Sunday at the Fdgewater Beach hotel in Chica go. Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Tate, Mr and Mrs. William Tate and Mr and Mrs. Lloyd P. Tate returned Monday from Florida. Briefs Pfc. and Mrs. Virgil Carpenter spent the weekend in Atkinson with Mrs. Carpenter’s parents, Mr .and Mrs. Lonnie Gray. Curtis Thomas of Newport News, Va., was at home for the weekend with his father, J. T. Thomas and Mrs. Thomas. Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Perkins of Cleveland, Ohio, stopped over for the weekend with Mr. Perkins’ sister, Mrs. Lewis Marts, and Mr. Marts. Home Club Leaders Attend Conference Three county leaders in Home Demonstration club activities and Miss Flora McDonald, home agent, attended an International Relations conference held in Chapel Hill Thursday of last week. They were Miss Alma Edwards of the Deep River club and Mrs. J. H. McCaskill of the Holly Grove club, who are county edu cational leaders, and Mrs. Lloyd Thomas of the Springfield club, county citizenship leader. Miss McDonald pointed out that Home Demonstration club mem bers are interested in education and citizenship as well as home- making. Persons attending the confer ence were urged to learn to un derstand foreign attitudes and to appreciate our own culture in, this nation. Ash Wednesday At St. Anthony's Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, which occurs next week will be marked at St. Anthony’s Catholic church by the blessing and distribution of the ashes both before and after the 8 a. m. mass,. The ashes will also be distribut ed after both masses Sunday morning, March 2. Way of the Cross will be held at the church at 4 p. m. next Fri day and each Friday thereafter throughout the solemn 40-day season of Lent. A.
