North Carolina Page Eleven Junior Sandhills Tennis Association Organized By Youthful Players Here Will Promote Sport With Continuing iUd Of Senior Gi^oup The Junior Sandhills Tennis as sociation, for boys and girls up to 18 years cf age, was organized at a meeting held recently at the ' elementary school library. The young people, numbering about 20, elected officers, stated their objectives, started planning g, events for the coming tennis sea son and laid the groundwork for the writing of a constitution. Steve Choate, winner of the Junior Boys Singles title in the 1951 Junior Sandhills Open, was elected president; Kenneth Tew, vice - president, Patty Woodell, secretary, and Johnny W)atkins treasurer. Seven directors were chosen—Charles Watkins, Beryl Holliday, Dorothy Newton, Tony W Parker and Lillian Bullock of Southern Pines, Julia McCaskill and Anne Hamor of Pinehurst. All have been active and interest ed participants in junior events held here, and several have won trophies. Assisting with the organization were Harry Lee Brown, Jr., An gelo Montesanti and Don Moore, members of the Sandhills Tennis a association, which in its existence of almost five years has done much to promote and encourage youthful interest in the game. With many young people now becoming accomplished players, experienced in a number of tour naments, it was fejt they are now ready to branch out on their own, with continued help and encour agement from the senior organi zation. Plano Sales and Service Phone 92-L Three Points Sanford Virgil C Willard, Vass Farmer, Passes Tuesday Virgil C. Willard, 43, of Vass died Tuesday night at a Durham hospital after a week’s illness. Funeral services were held Thursday at 3 p. m. at Vass Pres byterian church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. C. K. Taffe, with burial following in Johnson Grove cemetery. Mr. Willard was born Septem ber 24, 1908, in Guilford county, the son of Eugene and Daisy Payne Willard. He moved in 1940 from Forsyth county to Moore, where he was actively engaged in farming until the time of his death. Surviving are his wife, the for mer ' Pearlie Williams; three daughters, Peggy, Reba and Joyce Ann, and two sons, V. C., Jr., and Randall, all of the home; his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Wil lard, of Kemersville, and four brothers, Vetral, of High Point, and Jacob, Earlie and Clay of Ker- nersville. laxation for the members, en couragement of clean play and good sportsmanship and coopera tion with the Sandhills Tennis as sociation in promoting their total tennis program. In order to achieve this last goal more fully, it was decided that the officers and directors of the two organiza tions hold occasional joint meet ings, and that the junior group have two advisors from the senior group. Wholehearted approval was given the suggestion that the Junior Sandhill Invitational tour nament, formerly the Open, be broadened to include entrants from a wide area of the two Caro lines, provided suitable housing arrangements can be made for vis iting- players.
