North Carolina’s 85th State Fair To Be Held In Raleigh October 14-18 c An official invitation for North Carojinians to enter exhibits in, and attend the 1952 N. C. State Fair has been issued by Governor W. Kerr Scott and Commissioner of Agriculture, L. Y. BaUentine. The fair, which will have its 85th renewal here October 14-18, is a division of the State Department of Agriculture. Calling attention to the larger and finer facilities. Governor Scott termed the State Fair “the greatest of all annual get-togeth ers in North Carolina for a reflec tion of the yesterdays, the accom plishments of today, and the trend of the tomorrows in our State.” Commissioner BaUentine said “there will be more to see, enjoy and learn at this year’s inspiring spectacle of North Carolina’s ac complishments.” He listed ex panded and improved facilities in cluding the big new livestock judging and exhibition arena which is expected to be in partial use this year, the Youth Center where junior exhibitors will be quartered, and greatly enlarged and more accessible parking lots. “Wie want the Fair to be a lot of fun for everybody,” Mr. Bal- lentine declared. ‘‘A place to re lax; a milestone of progress; a festival of the facts that make North Carolina the No. 1 State in the South; and a meeting place for the exchange of information and ideas.” A geographical motif is used in George A. Hamid’s grandstand revue, “Phantasies of 1952,” which will be one of the entertainment attractions, ^uilt upon a theme of “See America First',” the big stage spectacle dedicates one complete scene to each of the four cardinal points of the compass. In announcing the return of the George Hamid show as the fea ture grandstand attraction. Dr. J. S. Dorton, manager of the State Fair, said the Hamid revues have been generally acclaimed as the finest outdoor stage attractions in America. Harness horse races will be staged three afternoons during the festivities. Dr. J. S. Dorton, fair manager, has announced. The speed events for trotters and pac ers on the half-mile Fairgrounds dirt track are sanctioned by the U. S. Trotting association. On the opening day of the Fair, Tuesday, October 14, a 2:14 trot and a 2:14 pace will be held, with amateur pony races as an added feature. On Thursday, October 16, the feature race event will be a free-for-all trot for a trophy to be presented by Governor W. Kerr Scott. Also on this program will be ^ 2-yeaE-old trot of two dashes, and a 2:18 pace. On Friday, October 17, the pacers will compete in a free-for- all event for a trophy to be pre sented by Commissioner Ballen- tine. The race program will also include a two-dash 2-year-old pac6, and a 2:18 trot. A cow with a boudoir and a calf in a play pen will be one of the feature attractions. Dr. Dor ton reports that “Elsie”, the fa mous Borden cow, and her little bull son, “Beauregard,” will be on exhibit throughout Fair Week. This will be the first visit of the famous Elsie Exhibit to the State Fair, Dr. Dorton said, although she has appeared previously else where in North^ Carolina. “But, said the fair manager, “the fa mous colonial barn boud-oir has been re-designed and re-decorated and the exhibit is more entertain ing.” A description of the celebrated cow’s qu2irters includes: A tree- trunk, dressing table with Elsie’s favorite cows-metics—hoof nail polish, tail wave set, horn grower and Eau de New Mown Hay. There also is an over-sized family library, with suuch voluumes as “Animal Husbandry and Wifery”, “Practical Bull Psychology” and “Bulliver’s Travels”. Fishermen, too, will have “their day” on Wednesday, Octo ber 15, Dr. Dorton said. Two con tests for anglers have been ar ranged and Cash prizes will be of fered for the most accurate plug casters and for the best homemade fishing lures.
