October 24. 1952 THE PILOT-r-Southern Pines, North Carolina Flora MacDonald Presents Noteworthy Attractions On Concert-Lecture Series Five outstanding attractions re-'*' main on the list for the 1952-53 concert-lecture series at Flora Macdonald college, Red Springs. The first event, a concert by the Reginald Kell Players, an instru mental quartet, was held Monday night. AU the programs take place in the college auditorium. Single tickets, or season tickets at a con siderable saving, are available. Ania Dorfman, Russian pianist, will be the next attraction, pre senting a concert of classical mu sic November 17. John Jacob Niles, folksinger, will be presented December 9 in selections from his vast repertoire of American folk music, collected by himself, and sung to the ac companiment of h^s dulcimer. The Salzburg Marionettes, the world’s most celebrated marion ette theatre, will be seen Febru ary 20. The permanent ensemble consists of 700 marionettes and puppets. While their specialty is Mozart, their programs include Special Offered On Commissions In Marine Corps T|Sgt. John G. Smith, of the lo cal Marine Corps recruiting sta tion, announced this week that Raleigh area college graduates and seniors will have an- oppor tunity to earn commissions in the Marine Corps this spring. By February 20, 1953, th4 ex panding Marine Corps will enroll a total of 800 officer candidates, said Sergeant Smith. Candidates will begin their training on March 12, 1953 at the Marine Corps schools, Quantico, Va. Married or single college grad uates between 20 and 27 years old are eligible. Seniors who will graduate at the end of the current semester also are eligible, but iviozarc, ineir programs include before the February operas, plays and fairy tales, all, accompanied by the full Salzburg Mozarteum orchestra. Ogden Nash, famed humorist and rhymester, will give a lecture March 10. His stage personality is said to be as delightful as his poetry. Candidates completing the 10- week training course will be com missioned in the Marine Corps Re serve. Following this they will receive five additional months specialized officers’ training, also at the Quantico base, which is lo cated 35 miles south' of Washing ton, D. C. Sergeant Smith said that the necessary application forms are available at the recruiting station at Raleigh. He stated that it would be advisable for prospec-/ five candidates to apply as soon as possible. It was also announced that members of Marine Corps Reserve units may apply if they meet the requirements. ABERDEEN By DOROTHY MCNEILL Presbyterian Women Meet The Women of the Presbyterian church held their Regular monthly meeting on Monday evening m the church. The meeting was pre sided over by the president, Mrs. Lewis Merrill. After a routine business meeting, a most inspiring program was presented by Mrs. W. H. McNeill, Jr. The meeting was closed with prayer Entertains Book Club Mrs. Jere McKeithen was host ess to the members of the Sand hill Book club in her home on Wilder avenue, on Friday atfer- noon. After »a routine business session Mrs. P. B. Lewis present ed a most interesting program. During the social hour the host ess served a sweet course. Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Phillips spent the weekend in Raleigh vis iting their daughter and son in law. Mr. and Mrs, E. K. Scott. Miss Sue Swaringen visited friends in Henderson over the weekend. Billy Matthews reported to- San Diego, Friday, after having spent a twenty-day leave with his pa rents, Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Mat- bews. The Rev. and Mrs. C. W. Worth have returned after having spent a two week vacation at Wrights- ville Beach. Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Brewer of Sanford visited relatives in Aber deen on Saturday.
