State And Open Title Will Be Sought By Shooters MARY ANN SMOAK, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Smoak, of Aberdeen Rt. 1, has been chosen by the student body at Mon treat college to reign as May Queen in the 1953 May Day festiv ities. Besides being adjudged the most beautiful senior girl, she is popular and active on the campus, with especial interest in musi cal affairs. A student of piano and voice, she has been president of the college music club for two years, and is a member of the college chorus. She is vice-president of the Student Christian association and secretary of the senior class. PINEHURST NEWS By MARY EVELYN DE NISSOFF: Tournament Winners | The winner of the first Pine-1 hurst Country Club tournament, of the season, a medal play indiv idual event, was Capt. Alec T Roberts. The Rev. Adam W. Craig was the runner-up, and tied for third place were the Earl of Caurick, F. A. Landis and Edward Stevens. Mrs. Strickland who is in France. Mrs. R. F. Holden of Haverford, Pa., is a guest at the Carolina ho tel. Mrs. W. D. Hyatt and Mrs. H. W. Norris dte on a motor tour of the western part' of the State. Mr. and Mrs. Rowland McKen zie, of Cockeysville, Md,, and their house guests, Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Shaw, Jr., of Baltimore, Md., who Skeet shooters from all over the state and from other parts of the country will asemble this week end at Pinehurst for the annual North Carolina Skeet Champion ships and the new Tar Heel Open Championships, to be conducted by the N. C. Skeet association at the Pinehurst Gun club Saturday and Sunday. Expected to defend their titles are Ted Drake, High Point, holder of the Weeks trophy as winner last year of the suh-small gauge championship with a perfect 100. 100 score, and the co-champiOns of the all-gauge title, holders of the Thomas trophy, also with per fect scores, J. S. Mitchell of Charlotte, and Willie Brown, of Fayetteville. The program will comprise the sahie classes as last year, with the sub-small and 20-gauge matches to bf shot on Saturday, and the all-gauge Sunday. Competition for the state titles will he closed for North Carolinians, but the Tar Heel titles Will be open to all comers, firom within and beyond the state borders. In addition to the individual titles, there will be trophies for the junior and ladies’ champion ships, and for two-man and five- man teams, for five-man service teams aiid for the high-over-all of the shoot through the three events. The state association is headed by C. O. Eatman, Greensboro, as president; J. S. Mitchell, Char lotte, vice-president, and Albert S. Tufts, Pinehurst, secretary- treasurer. Member clubs include the High Point Gun club, Durham Wild Life, Eatman Skeet and Tran Field; Kinston Skeet, Iredell Claude P. Tyson, Carthage Native, Dies At Raleigh Claude Phillips Tyson, 62, na tive of Moore county, died Friday at Raleigh where he lived for the past 25 years. His death followed a heart attack. Funeral services were held Sun day afternoon at the Church of the Good Shepherd, of which he was a member, with burial in Montlawn cemietery at Raleigh. Mr. Tyson was born at Carth age, son of the Thomas B. and Nannie Marsh Tyson. He went to Raleigh in 1927 to become secre tary of the Boylan-Pearce depart ment store, serving later as secre tary-treasurer. He was a stock holder in the store and well- known in Raleigh business circles He was a veteran of World War 1, and a leader in American Le gion and Forty and Eight affairs He was a Mason and a Lion. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Wesley Jordan Tyson; three sis ters, Miss Mary Glenn Tyson of Arlington, Va., IVlrs. Frank Page of Falls Church, Va., and Mrs. Dorothy B.
