Farms Fifty-three new farm ponds constructed in Moore county this year were stocked during the fall with a total of 41,150 bream, it was learned this week from W. A Austin, county work unit soil con servationist at Carthage. The ponds will be stocked with bass in the spring, said Mr. Aus tin. The fish are supplied by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service from the McKinney fish hatcherj^ at Hoffman. Soil Conservation Service tech nicians assigned to Moore county, a part of the Upper Cape Fear Soil Conservation district, assist ed with engineering work in the construction of the ponds. Aside from acting as recreation al areas for farm families, and providing fish for family con sumption, these ponds are ex tremely valuable to the overall water conservation program of the county and district, the conserva tionist pointed out. They serve to slow up the movement of runoff water toward lakes and streams, thereby reducing the danger of floods and silting-in of streams. They are a useful part of the com prehensive program for erosion control.
