Fridav. January 2, 1953 THE PILOT-SoutheSrn Pines. North Carolina Paee Three Bennett Will Be Speaker At Farm Bureau Meeting Many Problems of Tobacco Growers Will Be Taken Up PINliBLUFF R. R. Bennett, tobacco special ist with the N. C. State Extension Service, will be the guest speaker at the first 1953 meeting of the Moore County Farm Bureau, to be held Monday at 7:30 p. m. at the court house in Carthage. Cards will not be sent out but all farmers and their friends are invited to attend the meeting, ac cording to the announcement from T. C. Auman, West End, Farm Bureau president. The program has been arranged with the cooperation of E. H. Har rison, Jr., county farm agent, who said it is designed to bring to growers much new information about tobacco. Mr. Bennett’s talk will touch on such subjects as plant beds, varieties for planting, tobacco diseases and insect' con troL Several new varieties are out which growers should know about, Mr. Garrison said. Also with the troubles farmers suffer ed during the past year, they will want the latest information on control of Black Shank, soil treat ment for Root Knot, etc. Mr. Bennett will endeavor to provide the answers for many of the growers’ problems at the meeting. A minimum of $15,000 capital is needed by a young couple start ing a small tobacco .farm in North Carolina, a study made by N. C State College indicates. Of tobacco growers voting in the recent hurley referendum on November 22, 98.5 per cent asked fpr quotas. Mrs. Hazel Allison gave an in teresting program using as her subject “What My Christmas Of fering Can Do.” Christmas carols were sung by the members pres ent. At the close of the meeting the hostess served refreshments to the six members present. The Margaret Holder circle met the same evening at the home of Mrs. Claude Williams with three members and one visitor present. The program “My Christmas List” was presented by Mrs. Herbert VanBoskerck. The hostess, assist ed by her daughter. Miss Barbara Williams, served refreshments. The WMU of Ives Memorial Baptist church met Monday eve ning at the church. Mrs. J. R- Morgan, president, presided over the business meeting. Mrs. L. C. Murphy, program chairman, gave an inspiring program on “Israel” Methodist Meetings Mrs. J. R. Lampley and Mrs. R. G. McCa skill were hostesses to the members of the Womvan’s Society of Christian Service at their home Tuesday evening with a large number present. The business meeting was pre sided ever by IVfrs. H. H. Trout man and the devotional was given by Mrs. Ehrman Pickier. Mrs. Lu- cile Olliver had the program “Shining As Stars Forever,” with Mrs R. G. McCaskill, Mrs. James W. Smith, Mrs. H. H. Troutman, Mrs. I. L. Meanor, Mrs. J. W. "real Mrs. Roy Wilson and Mrs. Digh- ton Fiddner taking part. At the close of the meeting a social hour was enjoyed. "The home was decorated with Christ mas greens, with a lovely Christ mas tree ning for their Christmas party. Christmas decorations were used, throughout the home with a i Christmas tree adding color and brilliance. The identity of Secret Pals was given and an exchange of gifts was enjoyed. The hostess served refreshments at the close of a very pleasant evening. Briefs Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Pickier and children left on Friday for St. Petersburg, Fla., to spend the hol idays with Mrs. Pickler’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. O. Godsey. Cpl. John Carpenter of Hunter AFB, Savannah, Ga., was at home for the weekend with Mrs. Car penter and daughter Marsha Lynn. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Goodnight and children, Pat and Rickie spent the weekend in Kannapolis with Mr. and Mrs. H. N.
