THE PILOT—Southern Pines. North Carolina Friday, April 10, 1953 New Membership Placards Available At Chamber Office Custom-made membership plac ards for the Southern Pines Chamber of Commerce have ar rived at the Chamber Office and will be distributed to the mem bers within the next week or two. Members who wish to do so may drop by the Chamber office and pick theirs up any time, said Johnnie A. Hall, membership ■ chairman. Those who are not members may pay dues for the year and receive a placard. The good-looking metal plac ards in yellow and green bear the legend “Member Chamber of Com merce, Southern Pines, N. C. De signed to Protect and Promote the Interests of the Community.” They have a removable date feature which is' practical as well as good-looking. The date “1953” on the placard indicates that dues for this year have been paid. A^en this date becomes obsolete, it may be removed and a metal “1954” inserted in its place. Dates for each year may be ordered at a minimum cost and the same placards may thus be used for many years. The Chamber membership has now reached the total of 57, with the following new members re ported this week: Colonial Stores, Inc. (two mem berships); Central Carolina Tele phone Co. (two memberships); The Midlands Nursery; Perkin- son’s Jewelers; Fairway Motor Court; Jefferson Inn; Welch’s Gift Shop. Shaw House Host To Visitors On Local Garden Tour Library Officials Will Plan Drive To Add Members Officers and trustees of ^he Southern Pines Library associa tion will meet at the library today (Friday) at 5:15 p. m. to discuss plans for a membership drive, said George H .Leonard, Jr., pres ident. Membership dues are the maior source of support for the library. Of late years the membership has dwindled, as the library’s needs have grown. Many renewals are long overdue and new members must also be added, Mr. Leonard said. OjooSelottrBasrar MAIT OR SHAKE QjyEll Tastes Better! The old Shaw House was bulg-+ ing at every seam Wednesday as visitors from all over the state poured in to buy tickets for the Garden Tour, sponsored by the Southern Pines Garden club, and to enjoy lunch or tea, or both, in its hospitable sinroundings. Wtih the herb garden the first item on the tour, its charms and special points of fascination to those interested in this form of horticulture drew a steady group of intent gardeners. Inside, the local committee was busy taking care of the guests. Mrs. A. P. Thompson of Pinehurst had charge of the commissary, with a corps of able KPs and host esses in Mrs. Virgil Clark, Mrs. Harry Pethick, Mrs. C. M. Peck, Mrs. Bert Premo, Mrs. Edward Schneider, Mrs. R. B. Hill, and Mrs. Joseph Taylor. Eighty luncheons and as many teas were served. I Charmingly decorated with spring flowers and branches of na tive shrubs, the old house opened its doors to the guests with a warm welcome. Many were “re peaters,” it was learned, coming back for the second, third or even fourth time, (this is the fourth year of the tour.) Among guests from the Char lotte area was Miss Easdale Shaw, of the Shaw family who built the house. Miss Shaw, who has made several visits here, and moved only recently from her home in Rockingham, brought with her two presents for the Shaw House: a little wooden bucket of ancient design, and an old.-fashioned cof- fee-miU. The two items were re ceived by members of the com mittee of the Historical Associa tion, of which Mrs. Ernest Ives is president. Youth Groups Meet Sunday A union youth meeting wUl be held Sunday at 6 p. m. in the par ish hall of Emmanuel Episcopal church. Taking part will be the trembership of youth groups of the Southern Pines churches, also of the Pinehurst Community church, which will be in charge of the devotions. The evening’s program will consist of supper, singing and a movie film. STAMP COLLECTORS CLUB The Stamp Collectors club will meet tonight (Friday) at 8 o’clock at the Park View hotel. What could be finer for a con- timiatic-n of a joyous Easter Week than the rollicking comedy with music, ‘T Love Melvin”? This gay Technicolor film, starring Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds with Una Merkel, Richard Ander son, Allyn Joslyn and the clever moppet, Noreen Corcoran, con tinues at the Carolina theatre this Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 9-10-11, at 8:15 p. m. with a Saturday matinee at 3. It is an astonishing picture des tined to please young 'and old, with Donald O’Connor a'gain dem onstrating that he is a formi dable successor to Fred Astaire, should Astaire ever carry out his oft-repeated retirement threat. Debbie Reynolds gives the youth ful veteran a race while always- excellent Una Merkel helps things along. Charming and light-heart ed, “I Love Melvin” registers as a highly entertaining musical comedy with more over-all bounce and verve than has been seen in these parts for quite a time. Coming Sunday through Tues day, April 12-14, is the beautiful production, “The Miracle of Our Lady Of Fatima,” in WarnerColor, starring Angela Clarke and Gil bert Roland, with a large support ing cast. Here is another “Song Of Bern adette” with the story based on the religious history of the events that occurred in 1917 in the small town of Fatima, Portugal. The miracles of Fatima have gained world-wide attention, and it has lecome one of the great shrines of Christendom. On October 13, 1951, on the 34th anniversary of the miracles, more than a million ilgrims gathered there. Starting Wednesday night, Vpril 15, at 8:15 and continuing hrough the week, is “The Blue Gardenia,” starring Ann Baxter, Lichard Conti and Ann Sothern. VISITS IN CAMERON Dr. J. A.
