North Carolina Friday, May 15. 1953 CARTHAGE NEWS By MRS ALONZO BLUE Annual Birthday Party The Women of the Carthage Presbyterian Church observed their annual birthday party Mon day night at the chhrch. Mrs. L. R. Sugg, chairman of church extension, had charge of the program. Mrs. Charles T. Grier presented the birthday objective “Furlough Homes for Missionaries,” for which a free will offering was t3.k0Tl. The social hour was held in the Sunday School building with Mrs. C. J. McDonald, social chair man, in charge. Celebrates Birthday Walter B. Cole, Jr., celebrated ,his 6th birthday with a party at his home on Saturday, April 25. There were 28 guests; Johnnie Stewart, Johnnie McCallum, Toby Chaffin, Bobby Myers, Bryon Hill David Barnes, Michael CaiApbell, Neill Clegg, , Wayne Powers, Orren McKay, Daniel Roberts, Jimmie Moore, Frankie Moses, Lee Caviness, Fred Beck, Jimmie McCaskill, Ann Kivett, Sarah Ann Crabtree, Joyce Crab tree, Nancy Crabtree, Becky Mc Pherson, Mary Spencer, Lynn Currie, Sherrill Moses, Diana Howard, Elizabeth Howard, Kim Isaacs, and Rosemary Kelly. Walter, Jr., met the guests and carried them to his room, where he served candy. They then went to the playground where swing ing, see-sawing, climbing ladders, and building roads and ponds in the sandpile were enjoyed. Singing games were entered into by Mr. and Mrs. Cole, along with the children. A picnic was en joyed. Walter, Jr., lighted the candles on his three - tiered cake and everyone sang “Happy Birth day.” Green and white birthday cake, block ice cream, and How- dy-Doody punch were served. The young host gave favors of candy, toys, and balloons to guests as they departed. Personals Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Currie were in New York and Philadelphia last week. They also visited Miss Kitty Currie at Princeton, Mrs. Currie’s sisters in Bergenfield, N. J., and Dr. and Mrs. Dwight Cur rie in Baltimore, returning home Friday. Mr. and Mrs. William Shields of Martinsville, Va., were Sunday guests of Mrs. R. S. Shields. Mr. and Mrs. H. Lee Thomas Jr., of Raleigh were at home for Mother’s Day with their parents. Mr. and Mrs. H. Lee Thomas and Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Lambert. Attending the historical meet ing at the Shaw House in South ern Pines Friday were Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Spencer, Mrs. C. T. Grier, Mrs. G. Brown, and Misses Mattie Kate Shaw, Bess Stuart and Mary Logan. Mr. and Mrs. John Barnes of Greensboro and Mr. and Mrs. Young Allen of St. Pauls were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. M. G. Boyette. Mr. Allen spent Mother’s Day with his parents in Peachland. Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Shoenfelt of Mount Vernon, N. Y., spent the weekend in Raleigh with their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Shoenfelt, Jr., and all were guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Currie Sunday. « Miss Kitty Currie, who is a stu dent at Westminster Choir col lege, has been selected as one of 40 members of the Westminster touring choir for next year. Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Kennedy and Mrs. P. K. Kennedy visited relatives in Sanford Sunday at- fernoon. Miss Lillie Norman of Dobson and Mrs. Rush Thompson and daughter Helen of Glade Valley attended the Mlay Day exercises at Flora Macdonald college last week, and on their return trip, visited their cousin, Mrs. Holt McNeill, Mrs. Thompson’s daugh ter Norma Jean is a student at Flora Macdonald. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Womble, Jr., of New York City are spend ing this week with their aunt, Mrs. M. J. McPhail. M'iss Kay Boyette spent the weekend with college friends from the University and St. Mary’s on a house party at More- head City. Mrs. Frank Blue of Burlington was the Sunday guest of Mrs. L. R. Sugg. Mrs. John KatsOs and daughter, Anglette and Mrs. George Metro- pole of Manning, S. C., were weekend guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tim Katsos. Mrs. J. K. Roberts is spending some time in Danville, Va., with her son and daughter-in-law. Dr. and Mrs. J. K. Roberts, Jr. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Barrett and son of Rockingham were Sunday guests of Mrs. U. L. Barrett. Miss Connie Pattas of Detroit, Michigan, is visiting Miss Sophia Katsos. The Rev. W. S. Golden and J. A. Lang are in Raleigh today to attend a called meeting, of the North Carolina Synod of the Presbyterian church. Mr. and Mrs. Neill Duncan Mc Leod of Knoxville, Tenn. and Mrs. Carlos McLeod and daugh ter, Miss Isabelle, of Olivia were Sunday guests of Miss Janie Mac Leod. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hunt of High Point and Miss Ruth Tyson of Raleigh were Mother’s Day guests of Mrs. L. P. Tyson. Miss Mary Louise McDonald of Greensboro college, Misses Lillie Ellen Wise and Helen Street Mc Donald of WCUNC, and Miss Car olyn Hall of Meredith college were at home for the weekend. Dr. and Mrs. P.
