North Carolina Women’s Activities ' Prizes Awarded In and Sandhills Social Events BESSIE CAMERON SMITH, Editor TELEPHONE 2-6512 Four Hostesses Give Farewell Party For Mrs. Jack DeHaas Honoriilg Mrs. Jack DeHaas, Mrs. William M. Gross, Mrs. La mar Welch, Mrs. Harrison M. Harp, Jr., and Mrs. George Hunt were hostesses Monday afternoon at bridge and tea at the home of Mrs. Hunt. There were 25 guests. The hostesses presented the honoree a white orchid, and a sterling lighter case with her name engraved on it, and the in itials of the four hostesses in the corners. Mrs. Cliff Dixon won high score prize in bridge; Mrs. Sam Slaugh ter, second, and the traveling prize went to Mrs. Edward Haf- ner. Captain DeHaas, is being trans ferred to Iceland, and Mrs. De Haas plans to leave June 15 for Philadelphia, Pa. She has been active in the USAFAGOS Offi cers’ Wives club during her stay here. Mrs. DesPland Is Delegate To Legion Auxiliary Convention Plans for Mrs. L. A. DesPland to attend the 33rd Department convention at the Cape Fear hotel, Wilmington, June 11-13 as a dele gate from the local American Le gion auxiliary were made when the Auxiliary met Tuesday night at the Legion Hut with the presi dent, Mrs. Veta E. Gorman, pre siding. Mrs. Rae Ashton of Utah, the national president, will ad dress the convention on Friday afternoon. The Unit voted to suspend the July and August meetings, as us ual. At Camp Yonahlossee Connie G. Pierce, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Garland A. Pierce, has enrolled at Camp Yonahlos see, Blowing Rock, for two weeks. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gar land A. Pierce, motored up with her Sunday and returned. Pinedodger Tourney; Mrs. Menoher, Champion 1 A luncheon at the Pine Needles | club Wednesday and the award ing of prizes marked the end of I the Pinedodgers’ Championship tournament, which had been in j progress for about a month. Mrs. Pearson Menoher won the I championship and received to keep a year the silver tray from Mrs. Ross Allen, 1952 winner, and as her permanent prize, a caddy cart. Mrs. Tom O’Neil, runner-up, was presented three brass ash' trays. Mrs. Jack White won the con solation flight prize, a golf um- | brella, and Mrs. Jean Edson, run ner-up, received a silver serving] spoon. MORDECAI ARE WED IN EMMANUEL CHURCH SATURDAY Attending Reunion Eugene C. Stevens left Wednes day to attend his annual reunion at Yale univrsity, June 13-16, with stop-offs en route to visit his nephew in Baltimore, Md., and to attend the Harvard-Yale Boat Race today. In a setting of green and white floral decorations lighted by can dles, Miss Peggy Jean Cameron became the bride of William Grimes Mordecai, Jr., at 5 o’clock Saturday afternoon, June 6, in Emmanuel Episcopal church. The Rev. Charles V. Covell officiated. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Danield David Shields Cameron of Southern Pines. The bridegroom’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Mordecai of Raleigh. Mr4. Arthur Eakins of Southern Pines, church organist, presented the wedding music. The bride entered with her fath er, by whom she was given in marriage. Her two-tiered veil of French il lusion was caught to a lace and tulle coronet with orange blos soms, and she carried a white prayer book topped by a spray of white orchids. Miss Mary Johns Cameron at tended her sister as maid of hon or, wearing a full-length gown of French blue Chantilly lace and tulle with matching lace mantilla. She carried a colonial bouquet of yellow roses. Miss Louisa Mordecai, sister of the bridegroom, and Mrs. Jamie Guin of Southern Pines, brides maids, wore dresses identical to that of the honor attendant with matching mantillas, and carried bouquets of talisman roses. Honorary bridesmaids were Miss Flora Ellen Cameron of Pinehurst, cousin of the bride; Miss Martha Bailey, Miss Nancy Duckett, Miss Virginia Nash, Mrs. Marshall DeLancey Haywood, Jr., and Miss Elizabeth Mordecai, sis ter of the bridegroom, all of Ral eigh; Miss Betty Alice Godwin of Fayetteville, and Mrs. Burt Per- ham of Southern Pines. The bridegroom had his father as best man, and ushers were Lieut, (j.g.) David Cameron, brother of the bride, Marshall De Lancey Haywood, Jr., Robert S. Horton and John Bailey, all of Raleigh. Mrs. Cameron, mother of the bride, was attired in orchid lace with matching bandeau and white accessories. The bridegroom’s mother wore a chiffon gown of periwinkle blue with a scalloped neck and velray embroidery trim, and her accessories were white. Each wore a white orchid corsage. Following the wedding, the bride’s parents gave a reception at the Civic Club. Members of the bridal party and parents of the couple received the guests. Mrs. Edward Gordon-Mann and Mrs Elmer Davis kept the guest book, and Mrs. Francis Dwight and Mrs Edwin Finch received in the gift room. Honorary bridesmaids as sisted in serving The bride is a graduate of the Woman’s College of the Universi ty of North Carolina at Greens boro, and for the past two years has been physical education and dance instructor at Saint Mary’s Junior college in Raleigh. The bridegroom served for three yecirs with the U.S. Army and is now a student of business admin istration at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. For her wedding trip the bride wore a powder blue suit of linen with lace collar and white acces sories and a corsage of white or chids from her wedding bouquet. After June 12 Mr. and Mrs. Mordecai will be at home at 1214 College Place, Raleigh. Attend Graduation Mr. and Mrs. Harold Collins had as their overnight guests Mrs. I David A. James, a pre-med student, was | vice president of the student body, a member of the Golden Fleece and the Order of the Well. He will enter Cornell Medical] school this fall. He and his broth er George, who is president of I the rising senior class at UNC, have visited here at various times. Brown gave the Bible study and Mrs. Dan McNeill presented a Survey article enti tled “Orders for the Day,” by Dr. James A. Jones, pastor of Myers Park Presby*terian church in Charlotte. Nine members and one | visitor, Peggy Shaw, attended. Mrs. George Heinitsh was host- J ess to Circle 4 Monday night with j an attendance of 15, which inclu ded one visitor. Mrs. Dorothy | Avery gave the Bible study. Mrs. Edward Landis gave the 1 Survey article and Mrs. Dan Ray | conducted the Bible study when Circle 8 met Monday night with] Mrs. L. L. Woolley. Ten members attended. Mrs. Audrey K. Kennedy has gone to her home in Brookline, Mass., for the summer.
