Zelie have returned from a vacation trip to California. Mr. and Mrs. Roland MacKen- zie, after a weekend stay at their Knollwood cottage, returned to their home in CockeysviUe, Md., stopping off en route to visit her son, a student at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Mrs., J. C. Bertrand and her three children are making a visit in Nantucket, Mass. Mrs. Edgar Adlai Ewing, Mrs. Henry A. Page of Aberdeen, Mrs. F. C. Page, and Mrs. Hargrove Vail are this week occupying the Roland MacKenzie cottage in Lin- ville. From there, Mrs. F. C. Page will go to Blowing Rock for a short stay with her son and his family. General and Mrs. Julian F. Barnes are back at their Knoll wood home following a stay in Osterville, Mass. Dr. and Mrs. F. L. Owens and their children leave tomorrow for two weeks’ vacation at Day tona Beach, Fla. During their ab sence, Dr. John Ashe, resident physician at Duke hospital will be the resident-in-charge at St. Joseph’s hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Julian Bishop have arrived home following a motor trip to California. Miss Nancy Hill Campbell, ex ecutive director of Girl Scouts in the High point area, is visiting her family, Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Campbell. Mrs. J. I. O’Brien has returned home following visits in Lowell, Mass, Lewiston, Me., and Myrtle Beach, S. C., where she was the guest of Mrs. S. A. Hennessee. Mrs. I. C. Sledge left yesterday for Devon, Pa., where she will pick up her daughter, Nancy, who is returning home for a two-week visit. Producers have been market ing slaughter cattle and calves at a record rate since February. Marketings the first half of this year were up nearly 30 per cent from a year ago; in the. April- June quarter the gain was around 35 per cent. Personals Miss Marintha Smith drove to Norfolk Tuesday to meet David Blevins of the USN, upon arri val on the Valley Forge aircraft carrier, and to bring him home. David is the son of Mrs. Jasper Blevins of the Cranes Creek com munity near Vass. Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Allen (Caro McNeill) of Concord were recent guests of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Evans, stopping oh their way home from Wrightsville Beach. Bernard Hartman, whose moth er was formerly Miss Eunice Thompson of Vass, and Michael W. Rochowiak, both of Baltimore, Md., were guests of Bernard’s aunt, Mrs. Thurlow Evans, and Mr. Evans for several daySj. re turning to Baltimore on Wednes day of last week. The two young men finished high school togeth er and are now entering the Air Force together. Mr. and Mrs. J. Thad Ellis of Siler City visited Mr. and Mrs. A. V. Autry Monday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Parker, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Moore of Robbins, went to Carolina Beach for the week end. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Griffin and family visited relatives in Charleston, S. C., from Saturday until Monday. Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Abernathy went to WiUiamston Thursday to visit their son Hassell and fam ily, and returned Sunday. • The Rev. and Mrs. Walter C. Mrs. Alex Smith has returned home from Lee County hospital, after a short period of treatment there. Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Thomas of Durham spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Thurlow Evans. With the Sick Mrs. Dock Hudson entered Lee County hospital Sunday, and un derwent surgery on Monday. She is reported to be getting along well. Leon Crabtree, who had been sick since Wednesday of last week, entered Moore County hos pital Monday for examination and treatment. Lewis George has been receiv ing treatment at Moore County hospital since last week. Mrs. George Morgan was admit ted to St. Joseph’s hospital last Friday for treatment. At the latest report she was feeling better. Visit Mrs. Brooks The Rev. G. W. Brooks, his wife and their two children, of Bir mingham, Ala., spent last week at Ridgecrest and attended the Brooks reunion at Bonlee Sunday. Monday they and Mrs. T. J. Brooks of Sanford came to Vass and visited Mrs. G. W. Brooks. The Rev. Mr. Brooks is a name sake of Mrs. Brooks’ late hus band. Rainbow Club The Rainbow Home Demon stration club held its annual fam ily night picnic on Wednesday evening of last week at Thurlow Evans lake. Sunday School Picnic The Vass Presbyterian Sunday school held its annual picnic at Aberdeen lake Wednesday eve ning of last week. Some of the group enjoyed swimming, while the children had a good time on the swings and other playground equipment. WSCS Meets The Woman’s Society of Chris tian Service held its August meet ing on Tuesday night of last week at the home of the president. Miss Ethel Davis, on Carthage Route 3. Miss Davis presided and led the devotions. Mrs. E. L. Finch was leader of a program on “Making Friends of God’s Children,” which told many jaiteresting facts about mission work in foreign lands. Mrs. A. G. Edwards, Jr., and Mrs. H. A. Borst had parts on the program, and Mrs. C. L. Tyson, Miss Louise Leslie, Mrs. W. A. Muse and Mrs. Finch read a playlet. Mrs. S. R. Smith presented a Bible study on “Prayer” in the absence of Mr. W. D. Matthews, spiritual Life leader. The hostess served refresh ments. Miss Agnes Camerhn was a guest at the meeting.
