CAROLINA
The Florida training farm of the
New York Giants forms the color
ful background of the warmly
human drama and love story un
folded at the Carolina theatre, in
“Big Leaguer,” starring Edward
G. Robinson and Vera-Ellen, this
Thursday, Friday and Saturday,
August 27, 28, 29 at 8:15 p.m., with
a Saturday matinee at 3.
This is the story of the hundreds
of eager youngsters who dream of
someday playing baseball with a
big league team, and particularly,
the story of young Adam Polachuk
(Jeff Richards) who has a two
fold problem on his hands when
he arrives at the training head
quarters for a two-week tryout.
First he must prove his mettle as
a third baseman to the farm’s
manager (Edward G. Robinson)
and to the great Carl Hubbell
(playing himself).
What a beautiful woman with
thirty-seven million dollars should
do about romance is the premise
of the comedy drama with music,
“Latin Lovers,” coming to the
Carolina Sunday through Wednes
day, August 30-31 and Septem-
Sunday and Tuesday at 3.
This poses quite a problem for
luscious Lana Turner, who, in the
leading role, gets a chance to dis
play not only her beauty but a
wardrobe that will set the distaff
side a-gasping. Miss Turner romps
through a poor-little-rich-girl ro
mantic comedy that can spell
nothing but praise.
Supporting her winning per
formance is a star-festooned cast,
including Ricardo Montalban,
John Lund, Louis Calhern, Jean
Hagen and Eduard Franz. Pro
ducer Joe Pasternak mounted the
picture with an experienced eye
to opulence and beauty, in which
latter quality he was aided mate
rially by the Rio de Janeiro back
grounds and gorgeous Technicol
or. Every ounce of engrossing
humor and romance was extracted
from a bright sophisticated script
and to make sure the patrons get
more than their money’s worth
there are several delightful musi
cal interludes and production
specialties.
Starting Thursday night, Sep
tember 3, at 8:15 is the Technicol
or epic outdoor picture, “Arrow
head,” with Charlton Heston and
Jack Palance.
