OCTOBER 30. 1953 Men Face Trial On Liquor Charge Two Sheffield township men, arrested last week lor-operating an illegal whiskey stiU, face trial in Federal court at Rockingham next March. Both are free on $500 bond, after a hearing before J. A. Lang at Carthage. C. A. McCallum, chief ABC of ficer, said that officers raided l^e still on Tuesday of last week, ar resting Curtis Welch, 34, of Rob bins, Route 2, at the still that day. Fletcher C. Williamson, 33, also of Robbins, Route 2, was at the still site when officers arrived but escaped. Hcwever, he turned him self in at the sheriff’s office in Carthage the next day. Taking part in the raid were ABC Officers McCallum and John K. Sharpe, Deputy Sheriff A. W. Lambert and Constable Oscar Bailey of West End. The still was located in a patch of woods in the Howard’s Mill section, about a half mile from Williamson’s home. The woods are surrounded by open fields, making approach to the site diffi cult without detection, officers re ported. “We had to take it slow and easy,” Officer McCallum said. The raid was made about 11:30 a. m. while the still was in opera tion. The 50-gallon, wood and copper submarine type still had produced three or four quarts of whiskey by the time officers ar rived. One barrel of mash was in use in the' still and officers found five other barrels of fermenting mash nearby. Sinclair Dealers In Contest Set Saturday Saturday, October 31, has been designated as Capacity Day lor Sinclair dealers in this area, Her bert Cameron, local representative of Sinlair Refining Co., announc ed today. Sinclair dealers in this area will compete in a one-day gasoline sales contest. The dealer attaining the greatest increase in sales of gasoline will be the win ner and will receive the Sinclair Capacity Day award. Judges will visit each station at both opening and closing to check and verify gallonage sales for the event which will be held as sched uled, rain or shine. While the con test is limited to gasoline sales, Mr. Cameron emphasized that it will afford an opportunity to deal ers to introduce new customers to the lull line of Sinclair products. Some of them, it turned out, had been on their way to the State Fair at Raleigh, driving from Asheboro or vicinity via Carth age, when arrested. One defendant, clocked by the speedmeter at 90 miles per hour, explained that he was hurrying to Sanford to buy new tires so that he could continue his jour ney to the State Fair. Judge J Vance Rowe gave Junior Glenn Hussey a severe lecture on the follies of high speed driving, and sentenced him to three months on the roads, suspended on payment of a $150 fine. His driver’s|license is to be revoked for 12 months. Solicitor W. Nicholson, Asheboro, possession non-taxpaid whiskey, judgment continued on payment of costs; Tilghman Boyte, assault and bat tery on female, nol pros on pay ment of costs by prosecuting wit ness; Frank Fry, Carthage, assault Fire Destroys James Andrews Jome, Carthage Fire destroyed an old two-story house owned by James Andrews, a young World War 2 veteran, in Carthage Sunday afternoon. Located on the street running west from the courthouse circle, the equivalent of two or three blocks distant, the house caught fire from an unknown cause while Andrews, his wife and two chil dren were all away. Two Negro men passing the house discovered the fire, sent seme one to turn in an alarm and proceeded themselves to break in the dwelling and removed most of the family’s belongings on the first floor, including furniture and some clothing, before the flames got out of control. Carthage volunteers fought the fast-spreading fire as best they could. The back nortmn of t'lo building was burned to the ground and the front part was gutted. Andrews returned home while the home was on lire, but his wife and children did not re turn until later, according to in formation received in Carthage.
