For Safely Listed
By County Agent
If you are one of the thousands
that will join the ranks of game
hunters this week, it will pay you
to remember that sportsmanship
and courtesy may save a life—
“maybe yours," says E. H. Gar
rison, Moore County farmi agent.
Mr. Garrison says the first rule
in good sportsm^anship is to “ask
the farmer’s permission whether
the land is posted or not. No one
likes to have his fall and winter
crops damaged by persons tramp
ing through soft fields.”
Second, and just as important,
he says, is for all hunters to re
member that three causes lead to
two-thirds of all hunting acci
dents: (1) humans in line of fire,
(2) mistaking humans for game,
and (3) hunting with the safety
catch off.
Sportsmanship is just good
manners, says Mr. Garrison. It is
common sense in handling guns,
plus consideration for others. It
means also the use of the right
gun for the right game, hunting
only in season and taking the
limit only if he can use the meat
or the trophies. For bird hunting,
the true sportsman takes a train
ed dog to retrieve cripples. He
puts out cigarettes and campfires
carefully, breaks matches before
dropping them and, in other ways,
uses his head.
Mr. Garrison recommends the
following “ten commandments”
for safety in hunting:
1. Treat every gun with the re
spect due a loaded gun.
2. Carry only empty guns taken
down or with the action open into
your auto, camp and home.
3. Always be sure that the bar
rel and actibn are clear of ob
structions.
4. Carry a gun so that you can
always, under all circumstances,
control the direction of the muz
zle.
5. Be sure of your target before
you pull the trigger,
6. Never point a gun at any
thing you do not want to shoot.
7. Never leave your giui imat-
tended unless you unload it first.
8. Never climb a tree or fence
with a loaded gun; lay it down.
9. Never shoot at a flat, hard
surface or the surface of water.
10. Do not try to mix gunpow
der and alcohol.
Open season for rabbits, quail
and wild turkey begins Thursday
to run through January 3. Deer
season, which opened October 15,
runs to January 1.
Tobacco Export

Korean Offering
All Chapels at Fort Bragg are
joining in making a non-denomin-

Orphans as part of their Thapks-
giving worship.
In this annual endeavor to aid
others, the Chapel congregations
8t Fort Bragg sent over $1,000 in
1951 and $800 in ’52. Such articles
as baby blankets, jackets, sweat
ers, socks, ba^y bootees and
trousers were purchased in Japan
•+1, „ * f u distributed in Korea directly
with growers at a conference held . a,..-,,, r'v.o-.i.,- . uiiccuy
by Army Chaplains to the or-
in connection with the N. C. Farm
Bureau annual meeting in Ra
leigh Hutson said that “during the
first eight months of this calendar
year, exports were 59 million
pounds, or nearly 30 percent
above the corresponding period
last year.”
However, he added that “do
mestic consumption for the same
period, has shown a small decline,
with cigarette production about
two percent below the annual
average of recent years.” This
change in trend was attributed
in part to the shift to king-size
smokes.
A substantial part of the in
crease in exports, the farm leader
explained, was due to “the pur
chase of tobacco by the United
Kingdom from the Flue-cured
Stabilization Corporation in the
early part of this year.” This to
bacco, taken from the 1952 crop,
was being held under option by
Stabilization. At the same time,
Hutson added that “export pros
pects, generally, are favorable in
most of the world markets.”
