Heavy Losses In
Poultry Flock
Can Be Avoided

.Heavy losses in ycur poultry
flock can be avoided. This state
ment has been made many ti.mes
to poultry growers in Moore
County. Our hope is that we can
help you prevent these losses. The
first thing you should do is to
take care of your birds the best
you know how ah the time. This
is a very simple rule but it is the
best one for you to follow. I
would like to remind you of these
things you should do:
1. Get disease-free chicks,
strong chicks. Some of our best
poultry raisers in Moore County
have seen 10 per cent of their
chicks die in the first five days
because of poor quality cliicks to
begin with. This is a loss of 500
chicks cut of 5,000; not because
they did not properly handle the
chicks, but the chicks were bad
to begin with.
2. Have a clean, dry house well
ventilated. Avoid drafts, always.
When your birds are eight or 10
weeks old ,and it seems hot in the
house, or ammonia fumes are
bad, don’t throw a draft on your
birds to cool them or remove the
ammonia. If you do, colds will re
sult in many cases. We believe
that ridge row ventilators will
aid greatly in giving proper ven
tilation.
3. Give the birds plenty of feed
er space for their age. Two thirds
of your birds should be able to
eat at one time at your feeders.
When only half of your birds can
eat at one time some of them will
not get all the feed they want and
you will not get the gains as you-
desire.
4. Water is very important for
poultry. We find that most-of our

The Dudley High Panthers put
on a full court press in the second
half to try to overcome a half
time 'deficit of 33-22. This how
ever, did not obstruct the Yel
lowjackets’ effort because co
captain “Duck” Hancock, Richard
Hill, Robert Williams—the Yel
lowjackets springy center—and T.
W. Nelson continued to pour in
surance points through the hoop
under tremendous pressure put on
by the valiant Panthers.
The Panthers closed the gap
and the Yellowjackets led by only
eight points with four' minutes
reifiaining in the game, causing
the home town partisans to won
der if the Panthers’ efforts v/ould
materialize.
The Yellowjackets, disregarding
the aPnthers tactics, remained
cool and put on a freeze which
enabled them to emerge trium
phantly over a powerful aggrega
tion.

space. Many do not have them
prc-perly located. Your water sup
ply should not be more than six
feet from ycur feeder. This gives
the bird a chance to get water and
go back to eat without breaking
his feeding habits. When waterers
are'too far away, you will not get
as efficient gains as you would if
they are properly located.
5. Treat your poultr.v diseases
early and prevent heavy losses
How can we tell when our birds
are getting sick? Four or live days
before loss begins in your flock,
the 'birds will go- off feed; this is
your warning of troubles to come.
If you will start the day your
birds go off feed to find the cause
and correct it, you can prevent
heavy losses. When you wait un
til losses begin in your flock, a
great deal of damage has already
been done and medication and
loss of birds is usually very ex
pensive.
