C., has announced that 21 historic and modern homes, gardens and pub lic buildings, will be open to the public during the annual Garden Club Pilgrimage scheduled for Thursday and Friday, April 1-2. Registration will be at the old Market Hall. Light refreshments will be served,at the home of Mrs. Gladys S. Moore both morning and evening, the announcement said. WITH THE ARMED FORCES Army PFC Joseph Kelley, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Kelley, Route 1, Aberdeen, will move to the Fort Bragg maneuver area next month with the 37th Infan try Division for Exercise Flash Burn. Kelley is a cannoneer in Battery C of the division’s 137th Anti-Air craft Artillery Battalion stationed at Camp Polk, La. Army Cpl. Jesse A. Black. 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Angus Black, Carthage, is serving with the 187th Regimental Combat Team in Beppu, Japan. The 187th “Rakkesan” team, which made two combat jumps in to Korea, fought as infantry with nearly every UN division. It is now stationed in Japan as a se curity force. Corporal Black, who holds the Parachutist Badge, ijs a rifleman with the team’s Company D. He entered the Army in July, 1952, and completed basic training at Fort Jackson, S. C. Tactical use of atomic weapon is going to run airborne operations a close race for prominence in Exercise Flash Burn at Fort Bragg this spring. PINEHURST NEWS By MARY EVELYN DeNISSOFF On Vacation Arriving home this weekend to spend the spring holidays with their families are: Gail and Claire Gardner from Chatham Hall, who will visit their mother, Mrs. H. H. Harper; from Duke, Bob Hobson, George Sherrerd and Arthur Deb- evoise; Ledyard Gardner, a stu dent at Duke, will spend his vaca tion in Florida; Lynne Sherrerd from Bryn Mawr; Elizabeth Horr from Oak Wood school at Pough keepsie, N. Y.; Penelope Dana from Hollins College in Virginia; Caroline Nelson, St. Mary’s; Syl via Calloway, a student at St. Mary’s goes to Coconut Grove, Fla.; Donald White and Philip White will join their parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. W. White; and Mary Lou McGraw, daughter of Mrs. Louise McGraw and a student at Gill’s school, Bernardsville, N. J., will spent two weeks with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. T. H. McGraw, Jr. Here with the Cornell Univer sity gouf team, which will hold a tournament over the Pinehurst courses from Sunday to Thimsday, will be Bill Sledge, who, with John Seely of Winston-Salem, will visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. I. C. Sledge. Entertains Mrs. Edgar A. Ewing was host ess at a cocktail party Saturday at her Knollwood home. Briefs Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mason, their son and two daughters, of Greenwich, Conn., are this week occupying the John R. Sibley cot tage. Mrs. Thomas Rudel and her daughter of Roslyn Estates, L. I., are visiting Mrs. C. M. Rudel. Mr. and Mrs. Henry C. Flory are due to return today after a trip to Charleston, S. C., eind Sa vannah, Ga. Mr. and Mrsj Durban McGraw and their four children, of Pitts burgh, are occupying the T. H. McGraw “Cherokee Farm” near Aberdeen for two weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Strickland, who have been in Florida, return ed Wednesday to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Strickland. Also here for a visit with his mother and father are Mr. and Mrs. Russell Strickland, of Bloom field Hills, Mich. Mrs. H. H. Harper is due to re turn home today after a visit in Florida. Mrs. W. O. Coleman of Kenil worth, Ill., arrives today to visit her mother, Mrs. James B. Franks, at the Cloverleaf apartments. Mr. Coleman will join his wife on April 1. Lewis S. Cannon attended the NCEA convention, held last Thursday a nd Friday at Raleigh. Lt. Tim Hyde, after a week’s leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Hyde, left Monday for Cherry Point Marine Base. Mr. and Mrs. T. P. Cheney have as their guests this weekend their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Claudius Miller HI, and their small son. True Crittenden, of Greensboro. Dr. and Mrs. Carlisle Morris of Metucher, N. J., are spending this week with Mr. Morris’ sister. Miss Mrs. Blake, 80, Passes At Home Mrs. Lovda Cole Blake, 80, died Friday night at her home on Route 1 Eagle Springs. She is sur vived by her husband, D. W. Blake; one daughter, Mrs. Lovie Whitley of Eagle Springs; one sis ter, Mrs. Nannie Hall of Eagle Springs; seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sun day morning at 11 o’clock at the Big Oak Christian Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. CARD OF THANKS The family of T. L. Blue wishes to thank their many friends for the deeds of kindness shown dur ing their recent bereavement. Lillian Morris, at “Hazelwood.” Mrs. Alexander Innes has re turned to her home after being a patient at Moore County Hospital. Mrs. Byrd Wauman and daugh ter of Darien, Conn., are visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roder ick Buchanan, at their home' on Linden Road. Child Welfare Program Held At Country Club A district meeting of Public Welfare professional staff mem bers from 10 counties, consisting of executives or superintendents, child welfare social workers and general social workers, with four members of the State Board of Public Welfare, Raleigh, was held at the Country Club here last week. The topic for discussion was the child welfare program in the state. The 10 counties represent ed were: Lee, Harnett, Anson, Montgomery, Cabarrus, Stanly, Richmond, Cumberland, Union and Moore. The majority of the counties had one or more child welfare social workers present. Moore County has a child welfare worker available and hopes to be budgeted for this most needed service to Moore County children in July, 1954, said Mrs. Walter B. Cole of Carthage, superintendent. Dr. Ellen Winston, commission er of State Board of Public Wel fare, led the discussion with the aid of Mrs. Idonna Russell, field representative; Miss Mary Frances Roberts, supervisor of adoptions; and Worth H. Hester, legal advis or and attorney for State Board of Public Welfare and the Attorney General. Those attending from Moore County were: Mrs. Cole, Mrs. D. lola King, case work assistant; Mrs. Myrtle D. McCallum, case work assistant, and Mrs. Sarah C. McCaskill, case worker.
