Edwin GiU Tells
Rotarians World
Must Think More
Neighborliness May
Be Lost In Speed
Of Modern living
The fast-moving modern world
needs time in which to think,
State Treasurer Edwin Gill told
members of the Southern Pines
Rotary Club and guests assembled
at the Country Club for their reg
ular luncheon meeting Friday.
Mr. Gill, one of the ablest
speakers in the State, was intro
duced by June Phillips. The Rev.
C. V. Coveil, president, presided.
“In an age characterized by
smooth efficiency, push-button
power and almost instantaneous
communication, the world needs,
as never before, time to think,”
Mr. Gill said. “Perhaps the most
characteristic single attribute of
cur day and time is speed. There
fore, the most important question
of our day is: ‘Where are we go
ing?’ ”
Modern man may forget the
great social value of neighborli
ness, the speaker warned. Our
grandparents, he said, not only
needed their neighbors but en
joyed their society. Corn husking,
barn-raising and women’s quilt
ing parties were ‘‘a wonderful so
cial experience.”
Must Teach To Think
Pointing out that our grandpa
rents were intense individualists
and exceedingly self-reliant, yet
quick to come to the rescue of
their neighbors in time of adver
sity, Mr. Gill said that now “we
desperately need the sort of edu
cation that teaches the child to
think for himself and to reach
creditable decisions concerning
the great issues that confront us.”
Modern scorn for the old vir
tues such as thrift and honesty
“causes us sometimes to yearn for
the old copy-book days whin the
hands of children were taught to
fashion words and at the same
time learn a moral,” he said.
During the course of his talk,
Mr. Gill also noted that while
North Carolina wants industry, he
does not think industry should
supplaiit agriculture as the chief
source of employment in the state.
The people of North Carolina
should not lose their roots in the
soil, he said.
Guests of the club were; Royal
and Roma Dion and Donald Cald-
erwood, all of Nashua, N. Y.;
Wynn Dadum, Greenfield,
Mass.; Jim Nelson, Dick
Mauney and Charley Morton
of Raleigh; Jesse Cooper of
Newcastle, Pa.; Reginald Linsley,
Three Rivers, Mich.; Mac Mc
Dowell, Bradford, Pa.; Joe Robb,
Montreal, Canada; Ed Ingraham
and Willard Ray and John Roz-
enhiti, all of New York City; and
