The tennis season is getting un
der way, with first matches with
out-of-town teams upcoming for
both the senior and junior Sand
hill Tennis Association teams, and
tournament plans going full steam
ahead.
The Junior Sandhill Tennis
team will be hosts Saturday after
noon to a team from Kinston.
Matches will be held on the city
courts.
The senior team, in charge of
Ray Schilling, will meet the chal
lenging UNC freshman team from
Chapel Hill April 25, on the local
courts. In June, the Eastern Car
olina League series will start,
with seven teams participating.
These and other plans were dis
cussed at the monthly meeting of
the Sandhill Tennis Association di
rectors held Monday night at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank de
Costa, with Mrs. Paul T. Barnum,
president, in charge. Patti Wood-
ell, JSTA representative on the
board, was present with two oth
er juniors, Lillian Bullock and
Frances Pearson.
Walter Harper, treasurer, re
ported a balance of $525.35,
enough to give the association a
good start on the season but not
enough to carry them through.
Ways and means of making more
money were discussed.
Plans were set moving for the
firsf upcoming tournament, the
Moore County Schools Tourna
ment to be held in May. Arrange
ments for the event, including
definite dates, were left with the
junior group who will have Don
Moore as adviser from the senior
association. H. L. Brown was ap
pointed by Mrs. Bamum to coor
dinate several suggestions made
for trophies to be awarded at this
tournament.
Ray Schilling reported on the
recent meeting of the Eastern Car
olina Tennis Association, at which
Durham was selected to be again
the site of the junior tournament,
with Chapel Hill or Rocky Mount
for the adult event. Two of the
defending champions are Sand
hill members, Lillian Bullock in
junior singles and doubles and
Mildred Gruebl in women’s
doubles. Whit Cobb of Durham,
well known on local courts, was
elected president of the ECTA.
It was decided unanimously
that the Sandhill AssociatioA will
pay expenses of its tennis team’s
out-of-town trips to the extent of
three cents a mile for the car,
and one meal for each player,

LeTourneau Talks
Heard By Crowds
Here^ At Aberdeen
“I believe that many people
have just enough of religion to
make them miserable,” said Rob
ert G. LeTourneau, of Longview,
Texas, the self-taught mechanical
genius who pioneered in manufac
turing earth-moving machinery,
to around 1000 people who braved
a down-pour of rain to attend the
Christian Youth rally held in the
Aberdeen school gym Saturday
night.
“There is no way you can jus
tify a half-hearted Christian life.
You have got to go all the way,”
he said. After telling of his ups
and downs and how he came to
know Christ and his dedication to
“Do my best to be God’s business
man,” he said, “It’s not how much
money I shall give to the Lord,
but how much of the Lord’s
money I shall keep for myself.”
This is Mr. LeTourneau’s motto.
Many Ai Meeting
Sunday afternoon Mr. LeTour
neau spoke before a capacity
crowd in the Southern Pines High
School auditorium giving dynamic
testimony to the power of God
and the need for living the Chris
tian life.
At the 11 o’clock service in the
Brownson Memorial Presbyterian
Church Sunday morning a packed
congregation was on hand to hear
him. He was brought to Moore
County through the efforts of the
Brownson Memorial Men of the
Church, led by A. L. Burney. A
large gathering at Carthage also,
heard Mr. LeTourneau earlier
Sunday.
Arrives In Rain
Despite the heavy rain Satur
day afternoon, a crowd of some
200 people were at the Knollwood
Airport to greet the LeTourneau
party, and went on to the Holly
wood Hotel for a reception. The
