APRIL 9. 1954 Raleigh Woman Sentenced To Year In Prison For Issuing Bad Checks Here Miss Merlin, Pleads Guiliy On 3 Counts In Recorders Court Miss Elizabeth W.. Martin, 55- year-old Raleigh woman who bought a used car here with a worthless $1,500 check recently and was arrested after she tried to trade the car to an Asheboro automobile dealer was sentenced to a year in the woman’s division of State Prison, after trial in re corders court at Carthage Monday. Represented by a Raleigh attor ney, Brantley Womble, Miss Mar tin—gray-haired and neatly dress ed—pled not guilty to a charge of false pretense and no probable cause was found by Judge J. Vance Rowe on this charge. She pled guilty to three bad check charges—one for $1,500 on a Sanford bank issued to the Southern Pines Motor Company here for a 1951 Pontiac, one for $25 given to the Belvedere Hotel and another $5 check. The three cases were consolidated for trial and the sentence to prison follow ed. She was described as having a previous record for similar of fenses.
