Kelly Promoted

L. A. Kelly, Moore County na
tive who is head of identification'
work with the Mecklenburg
County police department, has
been promoted to lieutenant in
the department, it was announced
this week. He has been identifi
cation officer with the depart
ment for the past year;
Mr. Kelly is a brother of Mrs.
T. L. Campbell of 340 N. Page
St. and W. B. Kelly of near Car
thage. He is a former deputy
sheriff in this county. His wife is
the former Marie Adcox Of Pine-
bluff. They have two children,
Larry, 16, and Beverley, 12.
Another honor is due Lt. Kelly
when he attends the meeting of
the International Association of
Identification Officers to be held
in Bermuda, September 9-14.
Now first vice-president Of the
orgsinization, he will become
president during the gathering.

ing held the position of chief of
the identification section of the
27th military police crime labora
tory, European Command, United
Armv.
He established the identifica
tion bureaus at J)urham and Fay
etteville, later becoming a civilian
employee of the Army. He has
studied under Dr. Harry Soder-
man of Stockholm', Sweden, an
international authority on iden
tification.

Lions Entertain
The Vass Lions Club held
Ladies’ Night on Tuesday of last
week, entertaining at a buffet
supper served in'the Little River
Community House in Hoke Coun
ty by the Little River Home
Demonstration Club. W. E. Glad
stone gave the invocation.
The Lions had eaten there sev
eral times and knew just what
good meals the Little River worn
en serve, and this was no excep
tion; The group did full justice to
it, from the golden brown fried
chicken to the delicious home
made cakes and pies.
After supper, with Charles Ray
Pope and John Alex Smith in
charge, the group played bingo.
There were around 50 in attend
ance.
On Vacation
The Rev. and Mrs. Walter C.
Smith, Jr., left Sunday afternoon
to spend their vacation with their
parents at Farmville, Va., and
Tacoma Park, Md. Mr. Smith
plans to return to Vass on Wed
nesday of next week.
There will be no preaching
service at the Vass Methodist
Church this Sunday, but the reg
ular schedule will be resumed the
first Sunday in September.
New Superintendent
Ralph Hendricks was elected
superintendent of the Baptist
Sunday School last Sunday. He
succeeds Sam Evans who has
served for three years. Other offi
cers will be elected soon.
Attend Convention
W. E. Gladstone, agriculture
teacher in the local high school,
and two of his pupils, Neal and
Eddie Cameron, attended an FFA
conference at State College a day
last week.
Irby Family Transfers
Maj. and Mrs. P. B. Irby and
children, Susan and Chip, went to
Raleigh Thursday and today wUl
leave for Kansas. Major Irby has
been transferred from Fort Bragg
to Fort Leavenworth. They have
spent this month visiting Mrs.
Irby’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.
M. Cameron, in Vass and his rel
atives in Raleigh, with a few
days’ stay at the beach.
Celebrates Birthday
Stevie Frye, son of Mr. and Mrs
Lewis Frye, was honored at a
birthday party Saturday. His little
friends brought gilts and the
group enjoyed games and re
freshments of birthday cake, ice
cream and candy.

Debbie and Donald Blue, Gary
and Mike Hudson, Randy Cam
eron, Brenda Scott, Jackie and

North Carolina last week, visit
ing places of interest in the Blue
Ridge Parkway. They attended
the outdoor drama “Unto These
Hills” at Cherokee.
Mr. and Mrs. Ted Waddell and
their four children of China
Grove spent Sunday with Mrs.
Waddell’s parents, Mr. and Mrs.
W. F. Smith.
Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Gladstone
are leaving today (Friday) on a
trip to the mountains, planning
to return Sunday. They will go
to Cherokee to see the pageant.

Mrs. W. B. Dowdy and Mr. and

Frye Sunday afternoon and called
at the J. M. Patterson home. Mrs.
Patterson, who bas been quite iU,
is reported to be improving at St.
Joseph’s Hospital.

John Howell in Bynum Friday.
Dr. and Mrs. Robert G. Rosser,
Jr., left Sunday for their home
in' Jacksonville, Fla., after visit
ing his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Ros
ser, for several days. Dr. Rosser,
Sr., has been sick for some time
and his son and wife spent the
greater part of their vacation
here, going to her home in Ashe
ville for a short visit.

visited relatives in Concord Sun
day.
Mr. and Mrs. T. L. McNair vis
ited his father, L. E. McNair, in
Raleigh Sunday.

Mrs. J. H. Abernathy at the North
Carolina Memorial Hospital at
Chapel Hill Sunday. Mrs. Aber
nathy remains quite sick.
Miss Bessie Cameron and Mrs.
W. H. Keith went to Pittsboro
Friday to attend the funeral of
Mrs. H. G. Beard. Miss Cameron
lived in the Beard home for five
school terms when she taught at
Cedar Creek early in her teach
ing career, and she and the family
have remained close friends
through the years.
The Rev. .Arthur Thompson,
pastor of Grace Street Methodist
Church in Wilmington, has been
spending pai;t of his vacation
with his father and sister, E. B.
Thompson and Mrs. Jasper Blev
ins, at the Thompson home on
Cameron Route 1. He attended
the Vass Methodist Church, his
old home church, Sunday morn
ing and was greeted by many old
friends.

Greensboro were Sunday dinner
guests of his mother, Mrs. W. C.
Leslie, and family. In the after
noon the Julian Leslies went to
Fayetteville to visit Franklin
Matthews at the Veterans Hospi
tal, which he entered last week
for examination and treatment.

pital to be ■(yith her sister, Mrs.
Ervin Kiser, who was quite ill
and underwent surgery on

to be improving.
