Reed of Southern Pines to Woodland Realty Co. of Greensboro, it was announced this week by George H. Leon ard, Jr., president of Resort Realty and Develop- ”,1 ment Co., who handled the transaction. The local agency reported Woodland Realty officials “most pleased with the investment” which was rhade after a survey of the community and sur roundings. THEATRES CAROLINA ■Continuing through this Thurs day, Friday and Saturday, Sep tember 9-10-11, at 8:15 p. m. with a Saturday matinee at 3, at the Carolina Theatre, is the Techni color hilarious comedy, “Money From Home” starring the nation’s top comedy team, Martin and Lewis, with Marjie MUler, Pat Crowley, Richard Haydn, Robert Strauss, Sheldon Leonard and many others. A horse racing story by Damon Runyon provides the boys with the type of antics and complica tions in which they shine most favorably Burlington Firm Gets Contract On Big Sewer Project In West Southern Pines Work Will Double Number of Property Owners Served The Dean Patterson Construc tion Company of Burlington of fered the low bid among seven competing firms when bids were opened at town hall Wednesday afternoon on construction of over a mile of sewers in West South ern Pines. The contract was awarded to the Burlington company for $12,- 339.75. This will pay for 6,110 linear feet of eight-inch line and 1,300 feet of 10 inch line, with all necessary fittings and labor. Work on the project must start within 30 days, according to the contract, with likelihood that it will be completed by November 16. The project will be paid for from cash funds, without necessi ty of borrowing, said City Man ager Tom E. Cunningham. It was authorized by the council last month. ' The manager said the construc tion will double the number of homes served by the sewer sys tem in West Southern Pines to a total cf between 120 and 130 FOR Land Surveying CONTACT Clarence H. St. between Massachu setts and Indiana Aves.; and on Pennsylvania Ave. between the town shop and Stephens St. Property owners on these streets will be allowed one year to make connection with the sewer as required by law. The first time that a sewer service cent of the water bill, will be charged to these property owners will be in March of next year. Temperature In August Hits 100 Or Over 4 Times Maximum temperatures of 100 or over were recorded four times in August by Mrs. T. A. Kelley, local Weather Bureau observer, according to the monthly record of weather conditions. Top temperature was 103 on August 16. The official thermom eter went to 101 August 5 and to 100 on August 17 and 27. ^ Maximum temperatures went into- the 90’s on all but nine days of the month. Lowest maximum recordings of August were 84 on three days, August 13, 30 and 31. The reputation of local weath er as cooling off at night, despite charge, which amounts to 50 per heat during the day, was main- ' tained well during August. Min imum readings o-n all but 11 days of the month went down into the 60’s, with a low of 61 recorded on August 7 and 13. On all but one of the 11 days with a minimum over 70, the temperature was in the low 70s. The exception was the night of August 18, when the minimum was an unusual 86. Rain was sparse in August, the report shows. On no one day did a full inch of rain fall. Heaviest rainfall of the month was .61 inch on August f9. With amounts from .13 inch to .48 inch recorded on six other days, the total rain fall for the month was only 1.94 inches. GOOSE REFUGE Wild geese will soon be return ing to the unique refuge estab lished' by the late Lockhart Gaddy at Ansonville, which is open to visitors from October, 1 to April 1. The refuge, managed by Mrs. Gaddy since her hus band’s death, is the winter ho-irie of some 10,000 wild Canada geese and about 1,000 ducks. The wild fowl become so tame that they accept food from the hands of sightseers. More than 28,000 peo ple observed the geese and ducks at Gaddy’s Goose Refuge during the past winter.
