PAGE FOURTEEN THE PILOT Girl Scouts On Planning Board Several Moore County girls took part Saturday in a planning board session at Sanford, looking forward to the Central Carolina Girl Scout Council rally at Dunn in April, 1955. The rally will be a two-day event, with one day for Brownies and another for Intermediates and Seniors, it was decided. Ex pansion was necessary because of growth of the council. Moore County girls serving on the planning board were: Carol Staples and Jan McDonald, of Southern Pines; Julia Banner and Dorothy Von Canon, of West End; and Faye Goodwin and Faye Crutchfield, of Robbins. Mrs. A. J. Banner of West End was among the adults-assisting with the meeting Saturday, along with Miss Cathryn Creasman, ex ecutive director of the council. State Forester Urges Tree Planters To Send Orders As Soon As Possible Shipments of forest tree seed lings for 1954-55 planting are now being made and the Departrnent of Conservation and Development reports its forestry division has orders for mere than 13 million seedlings, or about four million more than orders had been re ceived for this time a year ago. The department expects to pro duce and distribute about 20 mil lion seedlings this season as com pared with the record 16-miIlion plus grown and sold during the 1953-54 season. Director Ben E. Douglas said. “It is most encouraging to note the increasing interest in growing trees as a cash crop,” Douglas added. “We hope there will be at least two trees planted for every one cut down. Landowners are realizing there is money to be TO BE TREASURED made in trees.” Demand Growing As the seedling shipments to individual landowners began. State Forester Fred Claridge said “there are indications the 20 mil lion seedlings we expect to pro duce this season may not be enough to supply the growing de mand.” Douglas and Claridge urged all persons piginning to plant trees to get their orders in as quickly as possible. Seedling applications may be made to the State Fores ter’s office. Education Building, Raleigh, or to any district fores ter, county ranger, or county agent. Orders will be filled as re ceived. Claridge said the supply of slash pine seedlings for the 1954- 55 planting season is already sold. More than three million of this species were grown this year. Of the 13 million seedlings sold to date, approximately four mil lion were purchased by furniture and paper and pulp companies in the State for free distribution to FFA, 4-B Clubs, school forests, and to selected adult farmers, Claridge said .
