FRIDAY, DECEMBER 10. 1954 THE PILOT, Southern Pines, North Carolina PAGE FIFTEEN 9 Patrolmen Arrest Two Drivers After Speedy Chases, One With Stolen Auto Car Reiurned To Fort Bragg Owner Before Was Missed rThe perils of a patrolman’s life were well exemplified on two separate ■ occasions last week, when a pursuing Moore County patrol car had to step up as fast as 90 miles an hour in the wake of a speeder. The speed-demon motorist was apprehended each time, the first when he dashed along a dead end road into a farmyard, the second with the assistance of the Lee Conuty patrol when he fled across the county line. Cpl. M. S. Parvin was at the wheel of the patrol car both times Each pursuit began when he was working the electronic speed- watch in company with another patrolman. Tuesday of last week, about 10:30 p. m., Cpl. Parvin and Pa trolman J. E. Swaim were clock ing traffic on NC 27 about II miles west of Carthage when ; westbound car crossed the cable at 74 miles per hour. The patrol men hastily disconnected the speedwatch and started in pur suit. The late model Oldsmobile ahead, said Parvin, “took wings as it raced just ahead of them to Biscoe, turned left just at the Biscoe city limit — avoiding : roadblock the Montgomery Coun ty patrol had set up, on receipt of a radio message—and, with lights out, tore two blocks along the edge of town, turned into i rural road toward Eagle Springs then turned right onto another rural road. Both the driver and his companion tried to escape through the right- hand door of their car but ran head-on into Patrolman Swaim, who had leaped out first. Questioned on the spot, as lights flashed on in the farm house, the /pair:—wearing field clothes of the 82nd Airborne— said they were members of Corn- pay I, 505th Airborne Infantry The car turned out to be a stolen one. Billy Calvin Grayson, 19, the driver, admitted the theft from a fellow-member of Company I but absolved his companion, Fred Aguilar Esquer, who both said was “only a hitch-hiker.” Qharged with speeding at 90, also' careless and reckless driving, Grayson received a four-month sentence or $175 fine, and costs, in Moore recorders court Monday, also was deprived of his right to drive for two years. Esquer was sentenced to 60 days or $50 and costs for aiding and abetting. Federal authorities took over the charge of autO' theft, since it occurred on a military reserva tion. The car was found, identi fied and returned before its own er, Charles W. Matlock, knew it was gone. Second Race The second race started Satur day afternoon when Cpl. Parvin and Patrolman C. G. Wimberly were working the speedwatch north of Vass, after a motorist passed the machine traveling at 68 miles per hour. The car ahead, northbound on US 1, picked up speed and, the corporal said, “started passing everything on the road—on hills, curves, every where.” There were several hair breadth escapes from accidents as the car, traveling from 85 to 90 miles per hour, just barely dodged others approaching on the left side. The most frightening of these escapes occurred close to the spot where eight persons were killed early last year. Near Green Gables, just north of the intersection with Highway 15, Lee County Patrolman Cum- m.ings saw the car coming and flagged it down. In it were two University of Maryland students returning to college after a Flor ida trip. The driver, Barry Noo nan, of Hyattsville, Md., made bond of $150 for his appearance in Moore recorders court Decem ber 20.
