THE PILOT, Southern Pines, North Carolina
FRIDAY. JANUARY 14. 1955
Counly Basketball Summary
Aberdeen Wins Pair From Pinehurst,
Highfalls, Carthage Divide Contests
Southern Pines In
4lh Place, Moore
County Standings
Highfalls-Carthage
' Highfalls girls stopped the Car
thage girls, 73 to 49, Tuesday
night in the Carthage gym, but
the Carthage Bulldogs copped the
boys’ contest 72 to 60.
Leading the Highfalls scoring
was Tillman, with 24 points, and
S. Dupree, with 22 markers. Hus
sey was a leader on defense.
Carthage’s scoring was led by
Currie, with 16 tallies and Mc
Donald, 14 points. G. Kirby led
the Green and White defensively.
Jackson’s 18 points, and McCas-
kill’s 15 points powered the Car
thage Bulldogs victory over the
Highfalls’ boys. Barrett and Mc
Lean were defensive stars for the
Bulldogs. Mashburn bucketed 21
markers and Tillman got 15 to
lead Highfalls. B. Maness starred
on defense for Highfalls and also
garnered 14 points.
Aberdeen- Pinehurst
Aberdeen defeated the Pine
hurst Rebels in two contests. The
Devilettes won,the girls’ contest
53 to 39 while the close boys’
game ended in a 53 to 52 victory
for the Red Devils.
Blue and Myrick led the Red
and White scoring with 19 and 18
points, respectively. The Pine
hurst scoring was led by Hunt,
who tallied 17 markers for the
Rebelettes.
G. Cribb, center, scored 18
points and Matthews, forward, tal
lied 16 to lead the close 53 to 52
Red Devil victory over the Pine
hurst Rebels. Wathen dropped in
17 markers and Willard tallied 13
for the Maroon and Gold of Pine
hurst.
FRIDAY GAMES
Cameion-Farm Life
In games Friday night Cameron
decisioned Farm Life in two con
tests. Phillips led the girls’ 40 to
35 victory with 26 points as Mon
roe and M. H. Short starred de
fensively. Ragsdale tallied 14 for
Farm Life as Matthews stood out
defensively.
Cameron’s boys won 59 to 40 on
the strength of Johnson’s 36
points. H. Phillips and McNeil
were defensive leaders for Cam
eron. Farm Life was led by T.
McKenzie’s 18 points and George’s
12 tallies. McKenzie was also a
defensive standout.
Carthage-Wesimoore
Carthage’s girls stopped the
Westmoore lassies by a 63 to 50
margin. Offensively Currie
lied 23 points and McDonald scor
ed 19 while the Kirby sisters led
the Green and White defensive.
The 28-point effort by Burgess,
of Westmoore, wasn’t enough al
though it was a night scoring rec
ord. Cagle led Westmoore defen
sively.
Guilford Jayvees-Carthage
Carthage’s Bulldogs were beat
en 80 to 61 by a strong Guilford
College Jayvee team.
The Bulldogs were led by Mc-
Caskill, with 19 points, and Jack-
son, with 18 markers, but this
wasn’t enough to cope with the
taller and more experienced col
lege boys. This was only the sec
ond loss of the season for the
Bulldogs, who have won seven so
far this season.
Vass-Lakeview-Pinehurst
Vass-Lakeview’s sextet edged
Pinehurst’s Rebelettes 48 to 46
but the Pinehurst boys came back
in the nightcap to stop the Vass-
Lakeview boys.
Southern Pines-West End
In other Friday night games
Southern Pines defeated West
End in a doubleheader. Newton
tallied 25 points for Southern
Pines, while Martin scored 22 for
the West End sextet. Final score:
Southern Pines 54, West End 36.
Watkins led a 65 to 51 victory
for the Blue and White boys as he
scored 26 points. Porter scored
14 for West End.
Robbins-High FaUs
The high scoring Robbins girls
rolled to a 66 to 56 victory over
previously unbeaten Highfalls’
girls. Brown scored 24 and M.
Williams, 22, to lead the Bearcat
scoring. Seawell tallied 28 for
Highfalls. Bill Maness’ 24 points
led Highfalls to a 52 to 29 vicliory
margin over the Bearcats.

Sweet potatoes should be har
vested as soon as the y reach de
sirable size. Since the sweet po
tato is a tropical plant it will
continue to grow as long as
weather conditions are favorable,
so if the vines are allowed to
grow until killed by frost many
tal- of the potatoes may be over size
or jumbos. It is better to dig the
crcp as soon as the majority of
the roots are of the most desirable
size.
